45mins and counting so far...

Efit: Ended up stuck outside Darlo and moving between signals, for over an hour and a half in the end.
Darlington station had platforms 1 and 4 working dual directions to clear the backlog.

Yes, there was a Class 66 (Freightliner I believe, but I've also been told it was DB Schenker) which failed smack bang in the middle of the platform.

Not really too sure on how trains work, logistically, can anyone explain what's happening here, has it broke down or?

As the train is an electric set (Class 91 - InterCity 225) and requires overhead wires to power it which Carlisle to Newcastle doesn't have, the electric sets have to be dragged over the lines.

Ah that makes sense!  Angel

Why allocate a train to a route it can't do, or was there some kind of diversion in place?

Yes, the Newcastle to Edinburgh section of the ECML is closed for four weekends for engineering work. Virgin Trains East Coast have been diverting via Carlisle.

I believe there isn't enough while keeping normal HST sets unaffected.

Hopefully it looks as good as 91114's Durham Cathedral livery. I've noticed that few have been disappointed with the recent liveries. 91101's seemed to receive a lot of praise.

I have to say, I like the new VTEC designs keeping them in line with the livery; however, I always think this will be my favourite livery to run up and down the ECML. Seeing it in person was quite a sight.

I really liked the 007 livery on 91107 as well, only saw it a few times in person. Definitely one of the more impressive liveries that the trains have worn, I also liked the Sky HD one when the set was complete and not a mix and match combination.

Have to say that looks absolutely fantastic. Interesting to see that they have gone for a blue base colour, given that red is the base colour for Virgin Trains. Red is also considered a ''Christmas'' colour, and associated with Santa Claus. Will hopefully be able to catch it up for a photo soon.
