Following consultation in the spring, the update for Phase 3 of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor (SSTC) will be presented at the city council’s cabinet meeting on Wednesday, November 23, from 2pm.

In 2016 we were part of 2 final teams comprising of engineers and artists commissioned to design a £2.5m promontory for the Vaux site in Sunderland. We were chosen along with Catherine Bertola out of a shortlist of 25 designers and artists by global firm Cundall, to work with them on developing an ambitious project to celebrate the end of an imaginary keel line starting 390m (the length of the Naess Crusader, the last and longest ship to be built on the site) away at a propeller sculpture in Keel Square and ending 30m off a cliff edge overlooking the Wear. Our proposal was for a promenade aand outdoor space on the top level with a habitable gallery and commercial space over 4 floors. Sadly our concept was not selected to be taken forward but we look forward to further proposals. A description of the design process taken from our submission follows:

I really hope this goes ahead, Seaburn is desperate for something like this, they've had to amend it about 4 times because of complaints from local residents so hopefully this time, they allow it!.

Work on the centrepiece of Sunderland's new River Wear bridge is almost finished. The team building the crossing has been working around the clock to construct two tusk-like structures inside the cofferdam in the river, which will support the bridge’s 105 metre-high pylon.

A symbolic new landmark that will stand at the tip of Sunderland’s Keel Line will be unveiled to the public at a consultation event today. The Launch – a giant metal structure that will project over the cliff-edge of the Vaux site and span down onto land by the riverside – will create an instantly recognisable landmark that will also become a focal point for activities and events.

Sunderland’s Seaburn Centre leisure facility is to close in just over three months’ time, it has been announced. Council bosses say that the site, which has been earmarked as being part of a huge redevelopment project, is “no longer commercially viable” to keep open in the short-term. The centre has been run in recent times by Everyone Active on behalf of the council.

It is no longer commercially viable to keep the centre open on a short-term basis and, therefore, it will close to the public on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

Investment in Sunderland reaches £1.5billion milestone

Investment in Sunderland has topped £1.5billion, with a series of major infrastructure projects set to transform the face of the city over the next seven years.

Sunderland Business Partnership has been collating the level of investment ploughed into the city since last year, and with new projects such as The Launch – the new promontory to be built on the Vaux site; the extension of The Bridges shopping centre; and further plans to improve the Cultural Quarter, with the restoration of The Londonderry pub, the cumulative total has reached a new milestone figure.

Update, the boat is about to pass Whitby at 9.50am, on schedule to arrive at Sunderland, not sure if it's heading straight down to the new bridge area or stopping in the docks until Monday.

Historic Pullman Lodge carriages set to depart from Sunderland seafront

The coaches have been a part of the city’s seafront for more than 30 years, but could be set to depart Seaburn as part of a redevelopment scheme.

Sunderland City Council, which owns the former hotel and restaurant site, has indicated the coaches could now be destined for Kent, as no one in the region has expressed interest in them.

If they are planning to move the hotel to a better place in Seaburn throughout the development then good for them, means bigger and better rooms and facilities.


I think i read a while back, there was a hotel planned in with the development... hopefully it's a Marriot redevelopment but i doubt it.

Pylon begins to move into place as New Wear Crossing takes shape

The magnificent centrepiece of Sunderland’s new bridge has arrived on-site. The massive pylon, which will form the heart of the structure, set off from Port of Sunderland this morning to travel the three miles up-stream to the construction site at Pallion.

Arrived early this morning in the dark, this was due to the height of the river, they wanted the public to see it but with it being so dark they didn't want people to see it so didn't tell anyone.

I emailed Siglion about Seaburn about when the development etc will start and have they got any final plans, i got this reply:


Dear Michael

Firstly many thanks for your enquiry. The Seaburn scheme is currently in for planning, with a decision hopefully being reached in Spring this year, March/April. This planning application is only an outline application which, if approved will set the parameters for the future development. The only element of the application that is detailed is a new car park on Dykelands Road. There is no detail design of the buildings as part of the application.

Once an outline permission is secured, detailed design work will start on the various phases, residential and leisure. It is therefore unlikely that construction of the buildings will start until the end of 2017/early 2018. Work on the infrastructure, including the new car park may begin slightly earlier.


Slightly disappointed that we won't see any work start on the buildings soon.

We are looking to see what place making activities could happen on the site whilst building works are yet to start. Some of these activities could then become longer term as well within any new development. In the next stages of our engagement with the local stakeholders we will be looking to hold some workshops to develop these ideas further and we will keep you posted on this should you wish to participate. 

During the engagement process we have always tried to be clear about what we believe we could deliver as part of the development. The outline application that has been submitted sets the parameters and whilst the kind of uses that you are suggesting below could be incorporated, we have highlighted the unlikeliness of trying to deliver a leisure pool or ice rink facility as part of a long term sustainable development, due to the very high running costs of such a facility which could not be financed by public funds. Sunderland City Council has spent £11m completing the Washington Leisure Centre and of course Sunderland is also home to the only Olympic size swimming pool as well in the region. For Seaburn we do need to attract private investment that will help deliver a long term sustainable development. Leisure is very much at the centre of the development, with something for everyone to enjoy, 365 days a year.
