Were there any Daimler Fleetline single deckers preserved with Alexander W bodywork? My memories of Northern & SDO examples operating Consett to Sunderland services 4,5, 15 and X6 (when not operated by Coach) in the mid 70's. These had Alexander W bodywork and the first I remember Northern having centre doors.

Link shows 4202 KCN 24J - What is the model of Northern pictured to the left of 4022? Is it a Leyland Panther with Marshall body. I know Daimler Fleetline single deckers have been preserved with Marshall bodywork, being operated by Sunderland and Darlington Corporation and have appeared at shows.
Anything on Alexander W bodied examples being preserved uch appreciated.

Yes, the bus to the left of the Daimler is a Leyland Panther with Marshall Camair body. Northern group had a batch of these c.1968-1969. They were unique in that the nearside windows were bigger than the offside windows.  The original prototype of this design of body was on Northern 2332 (ECN32E) on a Leyland Leopard chassis, but at that experimental stage the body was called the Marshall Astrobus.

(29 Oct 2016, 3:14 pm)a718abb Having driven both the Volvo B10BLE and DAF SB220GS, in their latter years, i can honestly say that the Volvo stood the test of time the best. The DAF's really were a nightmare to drive when old, and I gather that they had major maintenance issues as well when old. My conclusion is that, whilst I understand that bus preservation is an expensive exercise at the best of times, the DAF would probably have presented a greater challenge.

The Daf,s were nice to drive when they were new. But after A few years the throttle cables needed changing. many received the air throttle mod and were again nice to drive.

I did several engine overhauls on them at Chester LE Street and after the running in period they were fine. This said they did have A few built in problems that could not be overcome. The overheating issues in the summer being the biggest one. They needed A fair amount of attention to keep them going.

The Volvo,s however were (and still are) very good buses not so troubled by overheating. The only problem they have is the rear brakes are difficult to work on. We only got to see them every 3 weeks for inspection. They were also easer to work on.

The NNRG are looking for A much bigger building. When we find this and move in we will be holding open days to let people see what it takes to preserve and restore these buses.

I used to own a 1972 London Greenline AEC Swift with Alexander W body which I passed on a couple of years to a company in London who were planning to restore it.

Will the new corporate livery finally see the feature blobs being put onto the spare vehicles? So far they have only gained them if they have received a special promotional livery (Beamish and Sunfm).

Now with Arriva running the 308 this year on Boxing Day, do you think the following will happen?

- 309 not running
- 310 reduced to North Shields and Cobalt South only and perhaps interworking with the short 1
- 57 revised to serve High Farm
