Have I missed something in how to identify when there's unread posts in specific threads only, and then go to those posts? The old version of the site seemed to do it perfectly!

OK, I've worked out what I was missing! To get to the most recent unread post in any thread, just click the little black arrow just to the left of the thread title (on a desktop machine at least). Need to use the "Go back one page" button on the browser quite a lot, but I think it's something I'll get used to eventually .....
