The toilets need to be completely re-vamped, which would mean a temporary closure and putting money into the toilets.
The National Express waiting 'lounge' should have some sort of heating system in place, as well as potential power sockets.
Park Lane is one of the 'better' Interchanges - despite its poor (imo) layout - but the facilities aren't as good as they should be. The coach lounge in Middlesbrough Bus Station is heated and there are power sockets too. The toilets are somewhat nicer than Park Lane's. I think it's things like this that are important.

Very much, rather them bitching and moaning about "contracts" they could spend their time actually asking people questions about how they can improve the bus stations!
The layout is terrible but i agree, it could provide better facilities.... WIFI would be good
Ripping all the toilets out and re-installing them is the best idea.. a deep clean will be needed before!
Nothing will be done....

Wi-Fi would be nice, but since the start of this year, I've always advised my friends (if they've got no data), to stand on the Fab56 stand - there always seems to be one in!
Nexus doesn't seem to 'do' technology though. I can't see why Nexus didn't include the fitting of Wi-Fi in the refurbishment of the Metrocars...
If nothing's done, I'll send another e-mail to Nexus Customer Services and send photographic evidence of how ghastly the toilets are.

It would be, they need to update the bus timetable board thing to, (the one which tells u which service is due next at each stand)
It also needs a good cleaning, next to the stands etc
Make sure you have a mask if your taking pictures!

I hate the toilets in Park Lane as there is no where to move, it's too dark and metal toilets what is this prison, I'm Amazed that you could toilets that are worse than Bishop Auckland Bus Station. Middlesbrough Bus Station probably has the best toilets as they are regularly cleaned and when the downstairs toilets are been cleaned there is some upstairs in the express departures lounge so you don't have to go a million miles to find another public toilet. I don't believe in paying to use toilets as I think its an infringement of my human rights so in Durham I'd rather go to the toilets behind The Gate Shopping Centre which is full of old pervs than pay 20p.

The only problem with heating in the NX waiting area, would be that I'd imagine you'd get homeless folk using it. How do Middlesbrough prevent this happening (or does it happen)?

A further update to Park Lane toilets...
Thank you for your email to the Nexus Customer Mailbox.
Unfortunately, the toilets at Sunderland Park Lane Interchange are monitored and cleaned by Sunderland Council.
Nexus have no involvement with the toilets on the station.
If you wish to raise complaint with Sunderland Council, you may do so via this link:

Park Lane is also in the St Michael's ward (just), so I'd suggest CCing one of their councillors in. Peter Wood would be a good choice (despite being a Tory), as he used to sit on the Tyne and Wear ITA.

Should help however, and I think if the trial goes well (I'm sure they said they were trialling it at Park Lane first) it would benefit other bus/train stations, especially at night time when there is a higher chance of incident.

Im sure those who use Park Lane will love them, I can imagine it now, I whip out my Camera in Park Lane on the Corner next to the Entrance to the Metro for a Quick Snap of an Odd Allocation, then all you hear is "Photography is strictly forbidden on Nexus Property, Please stop taking Photos Immediately", then the Station Manager comes storming round to where you are to give another telling off, Waste of Money if you ask me, should using the Money to Update those Manky Bogs, or better yet knock the whole Bus Station down and Rebuild it from scratch.

Apparently they are replacing it with shelters similar to those at Heworth

Coming home from uni tonight, I went to Eldon Square for the 5:35 X25. Noticed that at the stand beside the doors, there was a very politically incorrect notice from Nexus, which read something along the lines of:
"Passenger Notice...
Please do not attempt to board buses after the driver has closed HIS doors".
I'll have to try and get a sneaky photo of it sometime.

I wouldnt say it is Badly Built...well other than the Double Stand for the 4/X1, Otherwise its ok in my opinion, As for Park Lane hurl as much abuse as you like at it, as it is horribly built Bus Station.

Two 20s, two Es and two 35s all waiting to get on their appropriate stands doesn't go down well during the morning peak...

I don't think the double stand for the 4/X1 would be a huge problem, if the bus station was used correctly. For some reason, the 4/X1 don't use the set down stands on either side of the bus station, which just leads to a congestion of people trying to board/alight two buses at the same time, on the stand. If the set down stands were used, anyone wishing to connect with an X1/4 would simply join the back of the queue, having walked through the bus station.
Not sure why these stands aren't used though? Only the 2A/2C seem to use them.

Then add Three 60s, Two 42s, Two 61s, a 38/238/700 and a X7 on the otherside, along with half a dozen National Holiday Setras and the Arriva X21/22 and 23 all in at the same time, then add all the Schoolies crossing the Road to head up Stockton Road to School then it is Bloody Chaotic.
