Not too sure, but it seems to be a regular occurrence at least a few times during the week. I live at Whitburn and somehow I usually manage to get on the cover ALX300's running board :').
36479 is on E services. Another 36xxx E200 was on the X34 this morning (can't imagine it staying on the service long), with 39706 covering for it on the 3/4/7/8.
36470 is also on E's
Here's a very rare one - 35161 on 100s today.

39716 also on 100's late afternoon.
12074 >> 63's this afternoon.
Pointer 35191 on X20s
SLF Dart 35158 was on the 20 while 35156 was on the 12, and the ALX300 with the LED Blind and Rear Advert was on the 4, But that Photo came out Very Blurry.
Just seen a Stagecoach "gas bus", looked like 28005, heading across the bridge in Durham towards Sunderland. Must be on test!!
27509 on the 30 in Newcastle.
Trident 17029 appeared on 35s this afternoon replacing 22195, and worked the penultimate trip due to leave Stockton at 1712 (actually left at 1735).

36-branded E300 24103 spent the whole day on the 37, finishing at James Cook Hospital at 1830.
22062 on 36/38 today on Teesside.
35158 on 4s.

Just seen a single decker on Newcastle 38,
about 1720 from city centre to Freemen Hospital,
Is it an everyday practice??

Also 21153 was on 22 today
22049 was on X34s earlier. One of the MAN Enviro 200s was on E services.

Was 22341 making an appearance on 38, on all day as far as I could tell as I photographed it at 1400 on John Dobson Street.

You do however get a single decker during the weekday afternoons, normally a spare Dart, which does duplicate runs to help with School loads. Does the 1442 from Corner House to Whickham View to cut out the bus that gets Heaton Manor. Then does a 1523 alongside the normal working from Whickham View to Freeman Hospital, as that working practically hits all the West End schools.

22 is the normal stomping ground for the B10BLEs, which is always good when you want to find them!

Last time I was at Newcastle (Last Saturday) all of the 22 services were operated by an E400
