We’ve got some very exciting news to share...
We’ve partnered with bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and technology company Fusion Processing to produce the UK’s first single deck autonomous bus.
Once complete, the 12m ADL Enviro200 vehicle will be completely autonomous and able to operate without a driver in an off-road environment. The technology also delivers road safety benefits when driven in manual mode.
In the short term, the bus will be used in autonomous mode only within the depot environment, to carry out movements such as parking and moving into the fuelling station and bus wash. Using self-driving vehicles within depots more widely could help improve safety, efficiency and space utilisation within the depot.
Work on the vehicle is being carried out at ADL’s site in Guildford and the bus is expected to be ready for use by the end of this year.

We’ve included a pic of an Enviro 200 vehicle, similar to that being used in the trial!
Watch this space for updates and sneaky peaks as we manage to get our hands on them!

ADL UNVEILS VISION TO SUSTAIN AIR QUALITY IMPROVEMENTS IN UK TOWNS AND CITIES WITH 10,000 CLEAN BUSES
Notes to editors
10,000 new clean buses over 4 years would approach normal levels of investment. UK operators historically registered between 2,500 and 3,000 new buses per year, although in the last two years this fell to under 2,000 buses due to the impact of previous governments’ cuts to support and socially necessary services.
Over three quarters of UK demand for buses is met by domestic manufacturers, including ADL, keeping investment in the country.
UK bus services require specific vehicle types such as double deckers which are uncommon in other countries and therefore not generally offered by international suppliers. A healthy and vibrant domestic bus manufacturing industry is crucial to prevent a dependence on unsuitable, imported products.
The UK bus manufacturing industry has been at the forefront of bringing efficient and cost-effective low, ultra low and zero emission bus technologies to market, often ahead of their development and deployment in other countries.

This is copied from ADL’s Facebook page:
It is with deep regret that as a result of the significant decline in UK demand for new buses and coaches, we have to announce a restructuring programme which places up to 650 jobs at risk across our UK business as we move to a leaner, more flexible manufacturing model that maintains our strong customer focus and best-in-class aftermarket support.
ADL has utilised the UK Government’s Job Retention Scheme as well as implementing salary reductions and reduced working hours for non-furloughed staff, along with stringent cost saving measures across all business functions. However, the steps taken so far are insufficient to align the company’s cost base to the current economic reality.
We remain firmly committed to working with our customers and supporting the bus and coach operating industry which itself is battling an unprecedented crisis. We continue to call upon the UK and Scottish Governments to act now to prevent further job cuts and preserve the UK’s world-leading bus and coach manufacturing industry.
The changes at ADL are part of a wider restructuring programme announced by NFI, affecting ADL’s sister companies in the United States and Canada along with the consolidation of ADL’s spare parts business in North America into NFI Parts.

This is probably the best place for this but it's been bugging me tonight and I can't find anything on it. Am I right in saying that the Enviro 200 MMC is effectively a 'posh' Dart (Dart 4) with a nicer frontend and some small updates over time but mostly the same bus that's been around since 1996? I think. They certainly sound the same (I know that's an engine thing obv) and have the same exact annoying rattles. Just interested since the Darts we're pretty much hated by the end by most people but just little things such as the layout and even the windows are near identical. It's really obvious on Arriva Durham's Enviro 200's.

If I remember right, the early E200's used 'Dart' in their name.

Yeah they did, but I know there was a generation after that. Curious whether it's still dart based or it's a whole new chassis / now based on the Enviro 300 - can't find anything about it either way tbh.

I’d say it’s similar to how the Vauxhall Insignia is the successor to the Vectra, which is successor to the Cavalier. There’s a familiar line there, but they’re distinct vehicles.
The main difference with the Dart is prior to the merge of Alexander & Dennis, the Dart was just a chassis with at least a dozen bodies on the market to choose from. I’d say today’s Enviro range has styling features from what was previously Alexander and Plaxton darts.

It was more about under the body I was looking for ie. the chassis etc. I still believe they are some form of Dart underneath, I know as Andreos said that they used to be the Enviro 200 Dart when they first came out and I don't think anythings changed bar cosmetic stuff mainly. Was just curious if that was the case or there has been a total new chassis etc built at some time or whether it's pretty much the same bus underneath from 1996. Thanks anyway though.

Alexander Dennis Limited (“ADL”), a subsidiary of NFI Group Inc. (“NFI”), one of the world’s largest independent global bus manufacturers, today welcomed the UK Government’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and the commitment to invest £120 million to begin the introduction of at least 4,000 more British built zero emission buses. ADL eagerly awaits the publication of the National Bus Strategy and further detail of the two all-electric bus towns and the first fully zero-emission city centre.
