The DBS system.

The whole idea was supposed to be a development from the CRB checks that were carried out in years gone by.

Once you were registered with the DBS, we (the public) were told that records would be kept. If an organisation/employer needed to check the records, all it would take was the individual to provide their reg number and then the organisation/employer would check online.

My most recent DBS check (my first since the CRB became obsolete) was a year or so ago.
An organisation needed to check it, so I provided my reg number.

It turns out they can't check my records, as I didn't pay the additional £13 within 19 days of issue to enrol onto the DBS Update Service, that would allow anyone to check it (with my permission).

Because I am well beyond the initial 19 days since the DBS was issued and my application records have been destroyed - I now need to pay the £54 application fee and undergo a new DBS. I would also need to pay the £13 annual fee to keep my records open for future reference on the DBS Update Service.
Totally defeating the point of introducing the DBS and seeing procedures follow the exact same system as the flawed CRB!

An absolute farce.

Aye, the system is a joke! I've currently several active, and I've another organisation that wants me to complete one. They won't accept my reference though, and insist that I complete a new one afresh.
I've just sent away for my 6thh one and i'm only 24....

Least Newcastle college did it for free....

I've never had to pay for my own like, but it's just the clart on of sorting documents out each time.

That was the whole point of DBS, so you didn't have to apply each and every time it was needed.

I have a stack of CRB forms going back years and all at about £30 a pop (to someone).

To pay more for the same piece of paper with a different acronym and then £13 a year on top of that seems bonkers.

Looking at seeing what sort of voluntary work I can do.
Those DBS applications are free.

Very, its even worse when they could juat look up on the system and get an update from that.

I think i've had to pay twice for mine.

Already have!

I understand why people have to do new ones if they start a new job (if required) or job, but once u send them away, they go out of date straight away - hence why i think places who use DBS's can do checks on you when they want.

I know u can sign up for £13? a year where they can do that but i think everyone should do it... but at a less price - its ridiculous to know i've had loads already and i'm 24....
Pile of what looks like dried puke on one of the doormats at Durham bus station.

He was the reason I played Rugby I still remember half the England Team hanging off him in RWC Semi in 1995.

My International Team has always been the All Blacks, even before England, I saw an All Blacks Team play at Gateshead in 1993 and fell in love with the Haka, it would inspire me to create the Fram Haka during a dance class at college
Was walking past a pub in Sunderland minding my own business and this person smashed a window inside the pub if it had of been outside then I would be injured all I was doing was waiting for WTX and South Tyne both on 2/2A where the winter gardens and 8319 to pull back on 20

In reality, the DBS is no different to the old CRB. Except you have to pay more now.
As I said yesterday, the CRB was disbanded - so that permanent record was accessible to everyone. Except it isn't, unless you are quick enough to pay your £13.

To pay more and then the £13 you mention (within 19 days) of issue and then £13 every year after...
Crazy.

Don't know about you, but I always keep my old ones - just incase something random appears on it.

The rancid old git who threatened to kick littl'un all the way to school if he screamed. Thankfully for him, his bus had left by the time I was on my way back because I was in the mood to unleash something far more unpleasant than any amount of child screeching. None of the words that came to mind to tell him what I think of big bullies who threaten violence against a child 1/3 of their size are repeatable here.
