Those pesky driving hours!

Huh
They're not just driving hours, they're working hours. So if the driver starts at 1225 s/he's got to be on a break by 1755 at the latest (and to be safe it's usually by 1725 in case they are late). Then the minimum break is 30 minutes. So no surprise really that there's an amount of light running early and later in the day, given the nature of GNE's operations.

35 mins minimum, its often double that though.

I really don’t see the relevance of driving or working hours?

The explanation that the service simply terminates at Easington Lane after peak makes sense.

Probably a bit short notice but it'll be on the 1 that leaves Gateshead at 17:00 to North Shields.

I was told that National Express is moving from Chester-le-Street to Riverside.

That rumour has been kicking around from the days before Riverside was even built.

I've often wondered if there was scope to expand Riverside.

Thats been on the cards for a number of years. Would be much better in my opinion. Not forgetting that some buses from Stanley should be relocating to riverside when the move to Consett takes place.
Looking at the map, it's extending the depot from "Death Row" to the border of Handy Drive. Not a suprise the depot would be expanded though I would have more expected them to build a second yard on the opposite side to Mandela Drive.
How can they divert the buses missing out so many stops when the routes are registered with vosa etc?

Emergency usage I guess. There's some leeway built in to it I'd imagine, particularly for the more frequent services.
