I would say Yutong's for the Quaylink, if they're successful on the 53/54, and they'll already have the start for the charging points at Riverside.

Quite possibly. Wouldn't be surprised if the quaylinks and 58 etc aren't part of the 2020/21 year order. But we will see what else is ordered for this year. Maybe new for X84/85 then Xlines will encompass all Express services, with no doubt streetlites getting xlines treatment

Going off the current X-Lines buses, the X84/85 and Streetlites already meet the X-Lines spec, so it would just be a case of repainting into X-Lines livery

Even as someone who dislikes ADL, I thought the E200EV was far better than the Yutong they had on the X66. Unusually for an ADL product, it felt refined

X84/85 aren't euro 6. Also they over 12yrs old. X66 streetlies are 4yrs old and wont enter CAZ

Q1/Q2 is expected to recieve Yutongs also at a later date.

With Wrightbus collapsing, i wonder if GNE will turn to ADL for their new buses for the "Red Arrows" and get E400MMC's?.. i just hope they hadn't put that order in for the X1!

Martijn seems to have been praising the MetroDecker on Twitter lately so they could be eyeing them up, but then again he said there are no more demos coming up north any times soon.


I think if Wrightbus gets saved, they'll definitely go back to ordering the StreetDeck because it's arguably the better decker on the market

Mechanically, the ADL E400MC is a superior product. Arriva's classic bodied ZF examples (barring the ones that Blyth & Redcar had anything to do with) have been good and even more so 7522-7540.

Can't comment on 7541-52 as they're voith examples but I'd imagine the E400MMC would serve GNE very well. My argument about the StreetDecks is that although the 67 plates have been good, they were purchased for the correct type of route and I know that 6333 has been helping out on the X21 but that's only been a recent arrangement (less than a year but correct me if I'm wrong).

I can't see the StreetDecks being suited to some of the routes they'll be going on particularly the X47/X70/X71

I believe 6332 has spent most of its time allocated to the X21 since it arrived, and has since swapped with 6333 with the rebrand to Xlines a few weeks ago
The 67 plate Streetdecks are far superior to the 15 plates in every way, they're more comfortable, more reliable and the quality just feels better.

Having never been on the Streetdeck on those routes I can't really comment on it, but those routes have similar road quality and hills to some parts of the X21 and the 67 plates cope with those reasonably well


IMO Arriva's E400s is far better than their E400MMCs, The MMCs just 'feel' cheap whereas all the E400s I've been on feel well built. Then again, it could just be because they're owned by Arriva so get the bare minimum done in terms or repairs!
The Unilink E400MMCs I was on down in Southampton did feel better, but I think they were only a week or two old at the time!

The X70/71 have some really hair bits which would really challenge the streetdecks. I remember when they had lolynes on, they would crawl! (And that was just in Sunniside, never mind the proper steep bits)

To be honest I never thought of the hills on the X70/71 as particularly steep, probably because I'm just used to them!

Would GNE's money be insured if Wrightbus weren't able to fulfill the order?

Yep 15 new buses on order for the X1 expected may 2020. No surprise which manufacturer has the order in my opinion.

Don’t think they’ve finished evaluating for the route yet. I would say coaches are better suited to the road type, but maybe not to the type of service it is. Guess time will tell.

Was mentioned when I went to Hownsgill Depot for a visit in October with the Northern Group Enthusiasts Club that the 58 will be getting electric buses

As long as its got some pull for the inclines and plenty seats it will do me. 
Sort out the 'express' element of the route and sort out the fares and it's even better! £4.60 Newcastle - Houghton single is a pi$$ take imo

Would it work to make the X1 stop once every two stops between Houghton and Easington, similar with what Stagecoach did on the X34?

Possibly, although that would mean one of Shiney Row and Herrington Burn would be missed out if the rule was followed to the letter.
Whilst quieter stops like Phili Depot may be served. 


I would put the 4 back to the original 194 route between shiney row and houghton but via burnside and maybe terminate the service at hall lane estate or doing a circular in houghton via hall lane and rainton bridge, and have the x1 split in 2 as service x1 and x2, with the x1 same route but every 20 minutes and have the x2 every 20 minutes and have it run between shiney row and houghton via 4 route and via hetton downs and terminate the x2 at Hetton bus station

No as it would only be done between Houghton and Easington with passengers able to use the 35/55/168 as suitable alternatives...

New vehicles


Green Arrow benefited from new Alexander Dennis Enviro200s this year. DAN GRAHAM
This year GNE has invested in 11 new high-spec Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) Enviro200s for its Green Arrow routes.

“We’re also working on raising the profile of our express routes,” Martijn said. “The North East isn’t blessed with the best rail connectivity, which means unlike in some parts of the UK, we’ve got a great network of express bus services which almost go the same way you would drive your car. They are filling the gaps in the railway network.

“Our new brand for that, X Lines, launched earlier this year on our X6, X7 and X20 routes between Sunderland, Peterlee and Durham, with high-specification Optare Solos. We’ve set a minimum vehicle standard of high-back comfortable seating, WiFi, USB charging points and next-stop audio-visual and we drape them in a classy gold colour scheme so they really stand out.

“We’ve also changed the tone and language of interior signs. For disabilities, our priority seats now note that not all disabilities are visible.”

ADL has been keen to highlight GNE’s investment in new buses from the manufacturer, which are the first orders it has received for some time from it. Asked why it has returned to ADL, Martijn responded: “I’ve run a lot of ADLs in the past and I think it’s a good product. That’s not to say that vehicles from other manufacturers aren’t, but we went through a tender process, which looked at price, fuel efficiency, build quality and support and innovation. As result, we had the confidence to try other manufacturer’s products and acquired some ADLs this year. The largest chunk of our order was still with Wrightbus – 31 double-deckers.

Engineering Director Colin Barnes added: “I think it’s fair to say we’ve not been disappointed with the Enviro200s so far. They have been faultless.” GNE’s ultimate vision is for all X routes to be at this standard. So far, the X21 and X30 have been relaunched, along with the initial X6, X7 and X20. There are plans to relaunch the Stanley and Consett routes – along with the Consett to Durham route – once the Wrightbus vehicles arrive.

“We’re ordering vehicles for the X1 to arrive in six to seven months time,” Martijn added. “In the next financial year – July onwards – we’re looking to relaunch the X9 and X10, which should give us a cascade of vehicles for the X84 and X85. In about a year’s time the whole express network should be relaunched to a very high standard. That gives us a simple proposition to get out there and sell – these are our fast, interurban buses which go right across our patch.



Electric on the way


A fleet of electric buses is also on the way to GNE’s Riverside depot, which Martijn said will be the first of their kind in the region. Two batches of nine buses are on the way, with the first – nine Yutong E10s – due to arrive by July 2020. They will be operated on the 53/54 service.

“We have funding support for a total of 18 vehicles,” Martijn said. “The order for the first batch has been placed and we are challenging Yutong as to how we can make these look more attractive and whizzy than an average bus.

“The second order will require more range and capability and therefore we are still in the evaluation phase. Battery technology is moving at quite a pace.

Colin added: “When we ordered the Yutongs a 374Kwh battery was available. Six months later, it’s been upgraded to 422Kwh, which is what we will get.”
