Wasn't expecting that!

Don't see the logic in that at all given Arriva have got a monopoly in that area with the 49/49a.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's just a peak time service through to Brandon like the old X46 they used to run through there until quite recently. Can't see them being stupid enough to run a regular service through there.

I can't think of a reason for doing it even for operational convenience, though? There's no depot or anything there, and no other service to interwork with. The only reason the x46 ran was to just to avoid running empty between Durham and the Crook depot after doing an x21.

Not too sure to be honest with you. It does seem a bit of a strange one though tbf. Maybe there's some demand for a bus through to Arnison / the College / Newcastle. I know the X46 years ago used to go through to Newcastle.

Yeah and if memory serves, the x46 used to go to the Arnison Centre.

Sure we'll find out soon enough.
There's loads of other changes on the 4th aswell I won't list them all but there's the 8, X21, X22, 34, 30, X45/6/7, 16, 12, X84/X85, 309/10/11, 60/61, 69, 49 just to name a few.

CSV says mostly revised timetables for all the changes, apart from the 21.

Yeah noticed that plus the 21 is upto every 7 minutes still so hopefully that might shut up the suggestions finally that it's getting cut to every 10 minutes so the Streetdecks can go on the X45/6/7 which gets suggested every other week.

Well, it appears that's not the case anymore and the StreetDecks will remain where they are.
But, not taking into account spares, the following could be achieved with what Consett have depending on future changes (not exactly January):
X45/X46/X47
- 8x new StreetDecks
- 3x 67 reg StreetDecks
- 3x 2019 ADL E400MMC
X30/X70/X71
- 8x new ADL E400MMC (X30 no longer extended to Consett)
X31 (incl X32)
- 3x new ADL E400MMC - not extended to Consett in lieu of X30 and driver changes at Stanley***
*** With the 78 swapped to Hownsgill, could the X31 not go the other way to Chester Le Street? Driving distance from Stanley to Chester Le Street is only 6.1 miles via shortest route. Driving distance from Stanley to Hownsgill is 8.2 miles via shortest route. Driving hours would be either 2x trips on peak (3 hours) or 3x off peak (4.5 hours). Time in the van would be approx 15 mins each way.
Plus, if the full Sunday X21 still operates going forward, then the 3x E400MMCs could then be utilised on the Sunday X21 thus qualifying for BSOG (B5TL doesn't qualify) whilst also reducing fuel costs.

Yeah, I struggle with it. I can't see ANE letting GNE muscle in without much of a fight.
Storx mentioned the college and Arnison Centre. I can see the logic in that and I can see there being some demand.
I'd assume the college trips would be popular during peaks - just when Nevilles Cross grinds to a halt. What that would do to reliablity across the rest of the route...
I can't see there being too much demand for shoppers in Brandon wanting to head to Newcastle in January though. Before Christmas - possibly.
Personally, I'd use the train over bus if commuting. It may be a bit more expensive, but it's a lot quicker.

Or.......to give flexibility for the bike guarantee (X30/X70/X71 only) - this would depend on "funding" rules but would afford spares. Fab 56 would remain every 15 mins, Cobalt & Coast same but PVR back to 16x from 15x (TBC).
X45/X46/X47
- Unchanged from above
X5/X15
- 4x 16 reg StreetDecks (forgot to mention)
X30/X70/X71
- 8x new ADL E400MMC
Hownsgill
- 3x new ADL E400MMC spare
X31 (if funding allows for a "Newcastle" route)
- 6097 & 6098 (both refurbished) + 6099 (already done)
- 6096 could also join with X31 replacing Consett X30 extension and keeping X31 at Hownsgill
Btw just thought wonder if this might involve the 13 somehow. Noticed that the times for that are changing but the 25 aren't. There's not much you can do with that without touching the 25 aswell. Possibly could be getting bolted on the 21 instead, with the other hourly bus being this new Brandon extension? Could imagine the timings are roughly the same roughly to do both.
Wonder what changes we'll see to the X21. I'm hoping more later journeys to West Auckland and maybe a Sunday service there as well but it'll never happen

Thinking out loud, I wonder if they could jiggle it so that the 13 is replaced in whole by the 21 and then extended to Brandon via the back lanes via Esh Winning and Ushaw Moor.
The 725 used to continue to Esh Winning back in the day and off memory, the rest of the route towards Brandon is do-able.

But all that enhanced BSOG should make it viable enough to run on an evening, like what happens on the 60. Apparently.

B5TL's don't qualify for BSOG sadly. Only the StreetDecks do.

I don't think ANE has the resources to put up much of a fight at the moment. While it is possible to dredge up old knackered buses from other parts of the country, reliability is going to be a major issue and, of course, you still need to find the drivers to drive them (and the engineers to fix them).

That bad at the moment? To not be able to put up much a fight on a key corridor like that, it must be bad.
The main thing j can think of as a reason for the 13 not being merged with the 21 is the fact for a small section both of those routes go the same way. Meaning the 21 would have to go past the University hospital, down North Road into Durham then back out the same way to go up to Sacriston. Would they want to have a continuous route that goes back on itself?

I reckon it could be do-able with a loop.
Arnison Centre - Aykley Heads/hospital - North Road - bus station - Fram Peth - Southfield Way - then pick up current route from the college towards Sacriston.
Return trip via College - Southfield Way - Fram Peth - bus station - North Road - Aykley Heads/hospital - Arnison Centre.
Almost like a figure of 8.
Not saying they would do that, but it may reduce any chances of corporate fallings out or drivers being fed raw meat.
What’s the likelihood of the 21 going back to every 15 minutes between CLS and Durham following the x21 being reverted back to every 30 minutes. Then alternating 21 journeys to Durham being extended to Brandon to give a 30 minute service there?

I remember when they first reduced the x21 back to every 30 minutes and the general consensus on this forum seemed to be that the current amount of buses per hour between Chester-le-Street-Durham would be adequate, and that either the 21 or x21 having a 15 minute frequency on that section is overkill. Whether the passenger numbers back that up or not I don't know.

Did the 231 ever serve Brandon? I can’t recall but it feels out the way of that route

231 was Newcastle-chesterlestreet-houghton-Hetton-Peterlee-Hartlepool

I have copy and paste all the changes on to a word document for anyone who would like a look
(Not sure how to set it as a post so its a separate scroll box, but if anyone can, you're free too)

'I think' it's only been the 721 and variants of the 46/X46 that have ever done the Newcastle - Brandon/Crook route from the GNE/Northern/United stable.
Can't ever remember the 231 doing that and the prefix would suggest that it didn't either.
Thanks Michael for posting that, really appreciate it.
Lots of school services are they newly won!?

I remember the X46 that United (Arriva) ran. It seemed to take a bloody age so perfect for X!ines

No, they're already run by GNE, may just be changes to times or small route changes.
