Can anyone remember the 139/140 circular routes in Sunderland?
Remember when it was a joint operation with Sunderland busways and go ahead northern then Tyne and Wear ominibus and go Wear buses then redby under licence from Stagecoach and go north east.
We had some bizarre workings on this route?
However it was a handy route.
What year did go north east completely take over the routes?
I’m sure Sunderland busways did a scholars 139?
Anyone have any memories of this route or photos of the buses used?

Before October 1986, the service was jointly operated by the PTE and Northern General.

Was it the Duxford clippers?
Service 139/140 started in 1983. It was mostly a new route, but it did replace sections that of the TWPTE 101 service.

Yea , replaced service 101 between town centre and villette road and 110 between villette road and Grangetown , while the 110 replaced the 101 between villette road and Grangetown via hill view, and also replaced service x14 between Doxford park moorside and town same route via Durham road and east Herrington, can’t remember if the x14 went via hospital on Chester road in what the 139/140 did, too many circular routes now gone like the 18/19 , now passengers have to travel through town/city centres.

It was 2006 when the 139/140 was taken over by Go North East. It became the 39/39A branded as Doxford Clipper using MPD's. The 39A part was dropped a few years later and the 39 was extended from Sunderland to Pennywell replacing the 26/36.

Wasn’t the 139/140 became the 29/29A/39/39A Doxford clipper
And the 126/160/163 became connected as a 26/26A/36/36A?

The 126 became the 26 and ran from Pennywell - Heworth replacing the 160/163 between Sunderland and Heworth. The 26A was an evening version a few years later. The 36 ran Pennywell - Witherwack. The 135/136 were replaced with 36A/36C (anti-clockwise & clockwise hence A & C)
Any pics of these 101 and x14 services or actually routes.
Hated derwent coaches drivers were horrible
Wish they could restore the 139/140
Thought today’s temporary changes were bad but just remembered it was an 30 minute service and 1 per hour on a Sunday and evening!!!!

check this 1983 Sunderland route map out . It shows 139/140. A proper bus network before Thatcher butchered it.

Don't forget though, it was Busways that removed the 1xx series from Sunderland and the 5xx series from South Shields not Stagecoach. They just changed the colours.
Yep I remember!! Changed the colours and culled many routes.
