Better Bus Area Fund
A partnership between Local Authorities, Bus Operators within Tyne and Wear, and Nexus secured funding from the Department for Transport (DfT) under the ‘Better Bus Area’ initiative. The funding secured was £4.972m from the DfT, and this was added to local contributions making a total investment pot of £6.651m for improvements to bus services across Tyne and Wear. The funding will provide highways improvements to key routes with objectives of improving the local economy by making it easier to travel to jobs on less congested roads, causing buses to run more freely and having a positive influence on climate change.
The improvements will provide upgraded junctions at congestion hotspots on 17 key routes into towns and cities to provide buses with more reliable journey times, benefitting 35 million bus journeys a year (a quarter of all trips made in Tyne and Wear) and reduce carbon emissions by 46,360 tonnes per year.

One thing I do know about is a bus gate is being installed on Pilgrim Street outside the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle. I presume this is funded by this.
Some good things, but not convinced that Nexus should be paying for onboard CCTV and WiFi?

Ermmmm Nexus, You forgot about the Bus Lane on Chester Road heading towards Hastings Hill when coming out of Sunderland, That road is far worse for Traffic than the one that has been pretty much completed at Wardley. Other things listed such as the Bus Link on Borough Road in Sunderland and the CCTV/Bus Stops at Heworth have already been Completed, So really this Document on the Nexus Website is already Outdated. And I wonder if these Intelligent Traffic Signals will installed along Durham Road for the 21 Between Chester le Street and Gateshead, Free Wifi is Waste of Money as comes as Standard on New Buses these Days, Particularly with GNE.
CCTV on buses isn't provided by this fund - this CCTV element is attached to bus stops, traffic signals and bus stations only: CCTV on buses is managed/owned/paid for by the operators. Worth noting this fund is a partnership between the DfT, LAs, operators and Nexus, with each party contributing to the pot. Although the release does does rather try to give the impression it's all being paid for/delivered by Nexus...

Wi-fi thing just feels like Nexus jumping on an old gimmick
There's a set of cameras on the top of Newcastle Bank in Birtley which are currently monitoring traffic flow, they are however ANPR capable which has cash cow written all over it!

Wi-fi in Nexus infrastructure, yes all well and good. But on buses? This should be left to operators to pick up the tab for surely?
I appreciate I'm probably in the minority here, but cameras to keep people out of bus lanes are good in my eyes. And yes, I'm a motorist. At times, the bus lane heading down from Gateshead Interchange to the lights is beyond a joke with motorists taking the mick. And they still get held up the next set of lights about 3 bus lengths away!
I drive a van and the amount of drivers that shoot accross into the no car lane far to early on numerous parts of Durham Rd, Sunderland annoys me... Get the cones they have along near Heworth!

I agree. You would think operators would be the ones who spent money on improving the passenger experience.
However it seems taxpayers are paying for that and smartcard technology on vehicles, whilst supporting price offers too.

It states that the majority of funding was obtained from the DFT. Only a tiny portion was contributed locally...
Nexus are advertising on the Chronicle website at the mo.
A banner appeared promoting the taxpayer money, being spent on improving WiFi infrastructure on buses.

The Local Sustainable Transport Fund has been finalised, with 5 schemes across the NE receiving funding.
So under the new combined authority, Nexus are potentially going to have to carry 4 of the 5 projects? Interesting times, what with other notable projects.
Go Smarter fund the 19 to Ashington.

Do I have permission to merge?
