First looks decent. Curious about standard and seeing what it is like compared to now.

Very interesting, wonder if we will see any Northern Trains cut?

Currently operate half hourly and obviously extended a chunk of those services to Bishop in line with other agreements made when they won the franchise.
It would seem strange to cut the Bishop runs back, however, I can see a presumably faster, TPX taking passengers off Northern say between Saltburn and Middlesbrough.

Saltburn has both platforms in use, but along with the Boulby, Teesport trains and anything from Whitby etc, I imagine the line could end up pretty congested.

Not sure the Saltburn TPX will be too frequent either.

New low-cost rail service connecting North East to London and Edinburgh set to launch

A rail firm planning a rival low-fare service connecting the North East to London and Edinburgh has ordered trains that will provide the "highest level of comfort and service". FirstGroup said it has agreed a £100 million deal with Hitachi Rail for five new AT300 125mph intercity electric trains. The four-hour service is expected to begin in autumn 2021 and will compete with the operator of the InterCity East Coast franchise - currently London North Eastern Railway - and airlines. Average fares will be less than £25, according to FirstGroup.

The class 800 at Heaton has now had the full TPE livery applied. Any guesses when it’ll enter service?

"Another new train for @TPExpressTrains on its way north, with @CAFRail_UK 397005 being delivered. Meanwhile, TPE has accepted its first 2 @HitachiRailEU 802/2s. More new trains. But will their intro later this year be celebrated better than the 195/331 fleets? #PowerUpTheNorth"

Taken from RailForumsUK "All being well, another small piece of the jigsaw should fall into place tomorrow when the first TPE Instructor driver passes out on the route beyond Middlesbrough to Redcar and Saltburn using a light engine class 68."

Looks like that small piece of the jigsaw happened!

Do you (or anyone else), know what the Saltburn extensions are going to be like?

I've not heard anything for a while and wondered if it was still going to be early morning/late evenings when they were running.

One thing that may not have been mentioned here is the fact that the extension has actually been curtailed from Saltburn to Redcar for the time being (despite the training run continuing to Saltburn). However the good news is that the service will run hourly from 06:00 through to 23:00. For full details check out this link: Redcar TPE Timetable

Id not heard that un-officially or otherwise, so appreciate the heads up!

Any reason why?

Slightly frustrating they're not going that extra few mile down the line, especially when there's the spare platform sitting there.

I can see there being the potential for one or two issues at Redcar, particularly when a Northern service is due on to one of the platforms there.

RE: First TransPennine Express - 8222 - 20 Aug 2019

This is good news! I remember the days on the Durham Coast Line on an early Saturday morning when a TPX 158 used to come up from teesside way passing through Seaham. I miss seeing those. Now it's GC or Northern with a bit of freight thrown in.

I thought I read somewhere the extension was curtailed to Redcar due to resource issues as going to saltburn would've required an additional train TPE don't have available.

Not enough slack in the timetable to run to Saltburn

Yeah, with the paths of the Newcastle and Middlesbrough services swapping over so that they no longer interwork (allowing 802s to be on Newcastle and 68s to be on Middlesbrough) there just isn't enough slack in the timetable for the extension to Saltburn to be included, it would require an extra unit which wouldn't be seen as economically viable. The TPE won't impact the northern service as it's scheduled to run to Redcar Central Down Loop every hour to get it out of the way
