According to the app, it’s currently working the 0843 from the Metrocentre to Newcastle.

No not now that is why they have Peterlee for middlesbourgh as it gets around EU regs

That's for the B5s yes. But the B9s still have them

That doesn’t matter - the X9/X10 are registered in two parts. Therefore, leaving Newcastle buses should be showing either ‘Peterlee then Middlesbrough’ or ‘Dalton Park then Middlesbrough’ and change to ‘Middlesbrough’ at either Peterlee or Dalton Park. And likewise on the return trip.

No idea whether they're digital or not, but there's the calibration to take in to account in additon to the driver having the disc or card fitted too.

X9/X10 isn’t on Tachographs anymore anyway - when they split the registration, that removed the need for tachograph. Which opened up a wider range of vehicles that can be used on the route, as appose to vehicles with tachographs.

Solars and omnidekkas are analogue.

Omnicities, B9s, B5s and mercs are digital.

Nobody's quite sure where or what the tacho situation is with the streetlites. Nowhere obvious!

There's also the age consideration too, drivers must be 21 to use tachographs.

RE: Go North East: Latest News & Discussion - May 2019 - big mac - 02 Jun 2019

What is the actual exact rule as to which routes are required to use tachographs? For example how come the x21 isn't registered as two routes when the journey time is longer than the x9/x10?

If the route is over 50kms (around 31 mile) end to end, then a tachograph needs to be used.  As with X9/X10 and many other operators, splitting the route into 2 (or more in the case of some routes), brings the mileage down, so a tachograph is not required.

I'm surprised that loophole hasn't been closed

There's national examples, but arriva demonstrated in the past you can have different route numbers and maintain a service.

The only real way to close the loophole is to set restrictions on through-services so that everybody would have to get off and back on to continue. But that just seems a waste of time.

I wouldn't imagine local authorities want to clamp down on it either, they provide useful connections to further places.

Looking at the TImetable, I think the X74 from Glasgow to Dumfries is split 3 times with a note at the bottom of the timetable saying -  To comply with Department of Transport guidance, this service connects at Moffat, Abington and Lesmahagow.
The connection is guaranteed and passengers may remain on the vehicle.
