Not convinced about this one. I think it's more of a political project, rather than one that fixes a massive problem.

As I said back in June (http://northeastbuses.co.uk/forum/showth...hp?tid=341&page=2), the Government need to realise there are other cities, people and businesses beyond Leeds and Manchester.

The current line between Leeds and Manchester isn't good enough - but a lot of that, is to do with the geography and victorian engineering.
The current line between Doncaster/York and Newcastle isn't good enough - but a lot of that is not to do with the geography and more the lack of track upgrades or loops.

No matter how much money is spent improving links to Manchester and Leeds, the bottleneck north of York will still exist.

I often look out of the train window when heading north on an East Coast at Doncaster and/or York to see what (if anything) is pulling ahead of us.
Sometimes a late running Cross Stinky gets in the way and the East Coast is held back, held up and stuck - potentially all the way to Edinburgh.

Added to that, are the lack of passing loops on the two track stretch.
If a freight train happens to have issues - it leads to the whole stretch grinding to a halt.

HS2 and HS3 isn't going to fix any of that.

As I've said elsewhere, I'm not against the idea of HS2 or HS3 but I'd rather see the money spent on upgrading the entire rail network - north to south; east to west - which might include building new lines or reopening old ones.

With the exception of track replacement, electrification and signalling, the network hasn't changed much since its Victorian heyday. In fact, as lines have closed, one could argue that our railways are in a worse state now than they were 100 years ago.

Total pie in the sky idea here (too much Railroad Tycoon).

The WCML has had millions spent on it and really, only serves a limited part of the country north of Preston etc.
At times heading down the M6, you are lucky to see a train at all.

The link between Leeds and Manchester is said to be important, but does nowt for the North East.

How about a new east/west link, basically following the route of the A66, using the valleys around Kirkby Stephen to link to the WCML?

No doubt it would cost billions and upset environmentalists...

Don't see why they need to spend billion for a HS railway when it only cuts times by 30 mins in some areas... waste of money.

Like you said... does nothing for us in the NE...

Ooo Friend, Bus Friend.

Government plans for HS3, which seem to have suddenly included the NE...

There are also proposals for upgrades, rather than building of new lines.

Wasn't HS3 the one that would link Wales to London?
