The Leeds to York section isn't that far at all.
Obviously the longer distance is the other side, west of Leeds.

As for the extension up to Sheffield, I wonder why they aren't extending it the few miles north, to meet with the already electrified section that runs from Doncaster to Leeds via Wakefield - or even on to Doncaster.
