I know it's very fresh but I reckon there would be some benefit to combining new service 42 with the 204/204A. The previous Scarlet Band S1 service offered a direct connection from Mount Oswald to Dragonville Tesco. As the new student accommodation is self-catered, I imagine there would still be a student demand for that link and for residents of the housing estate tbh. In addition lots of students live in Gilesgate and previously used the S1 to commute to Uni. Have one bus on the new 42 continue to the rail station and the other would continue through to Gilesgate and beyond. I know the 42 is DCC supported but I can't see why they would appose to this if the 42 service was still maintained apart from only one service per hour to the station.

Do you have time table to these new changes?

Could the 21 or 50 be diverted on the old X22 route (i.e. through Newton Hall & Carr House Drive), would the demand be there.

Not enough time currently to divert the 21/50 (or X20) via these areas, could maybe send the current X22 via there though as it currently has around 20 mins layover at the Metrocentre. No idea if demand would be there or not mind

tbh I have been on the X22, and that 20 min layover is for delays on the A1. I think, or the X22 would be ridiculous late all the time.

I've wondered if there's a deliberate operational decision to slow down the 21 between certain points (say Durham - Chester) , spreading the load and encouraging people to use the X21 between the same points.

The majority of the route has Newcastle services near by, Heworth side there is the 27, in the middle the 56, 57, 58, 21 etc, Team Valley South End there is the 28 and then Lobley Hill side the X70-X72 & 97

It’s more the fact they can’t really take much layover at the Durham end at the moment without getting in the way, so it’s all taken at the MetroCentre end

New Service 22: Newcastle, Bensham, Saltwell Park, Low Fell, Harlow Green, Washington Galleries, Lambton, Ayton, Chester-Le-Street, Plawsworth, Arnison Centre, Newton Hall, Carr House Drive, Framwellgate Moor, Durham, Shincliffe, Bowburn, Metal Bridge, Ferryhill.
Every 15 Mins (Newcastle to Durham)
Every 30 Mins (Newcastle to Ferryhill)

Reasonings

  • Would Connect Arnison Centre & University Hospital to Shincliffe, Bowburn, Metal Bridge & Ferryhill
  • Would Provide a Faster Service Between Durham & Ferryhill than ANE 56 (35  Mins on 22, 49  MIns on 56)
  • Would Provide Buses for Amazon at Bowburn.
  • Would Provide Extra Buses Between Washington, Chester-Le-Street & Durham
  • Would Provide Extra Buses Between Washington & Newcastle (Albeit via Different Route)
  • Similar Journey Times to XLines X1 Between Washington & Newcastle (36 Mins)
  • Similar Journey Times to Angel 21 Between Chester-Le-Street & Newcastle (51 Mins)

if GNE wouldn't take this on, I could see someone else doing it instead.

I think it's more to do with not everyone wants to go across the water to Newcastle so it gives a service say from Heworth to Heworth / Gateshead and if you change it then it butchers the loop.

If you want the link from Team Valley to Newcastle then imo the better option would be swapping around the 51/52 and 93/94 at the Western side of the route. So the 93/94 go via Dryden Road / Kells Lane direct to Gateshead then continue the usual route around the loop from there to the Queen Vic where it swaps routes with the 51/52 who then takes over the 93/94 from that point and does the Team Valley section around to Gateshead where that side will be extended to Newcastle instead of the other side. They might want to extend the new 93/94 to Wrekenton so it goes down Easedale Gardens and back up Sheriff Hill to keep the Low Fell to Wrekenton link.

It opens up a few new links like Wrekenton and Newcastle to Team Valley and Low Fell to Gateshead College. There's more than enough buses around the 51/52 route to Newcastle.

Now the 1 and before that the Blue Arrow no longer runs to the MetroCentre, how about an X22 style MetroCentre Express from North Tyneside?

North Shields - via 310 route to Battle Hill Drive - Wallsend - Byker - Tyne Bridge - Askew Road - MetroCentre

Would use double decks in between school runs like the X22 does

Most people in that area are likely to have Stagecoach passes so will use the 10+ buses to Newcastle an hour then change onto the 100 (when it's running). The time savings will be negligible once you have to time in the X22 will only be hourly etc.

The ones who don't will likely use the Metro and also change onto the 100 which even known would cost more, would be much much quicker even before the hourly again.

I used the 164 in a variety of directions. The only time it was used by choice, was when I was heading to Roker/Seaburn and didn't fancy a change.
Most other times, it was when a more frequent service didn't rock up. If I was in Sunderland and a 777 or 638 wasn't about - I jumped on the 164. Ditto if I was heading back from college and there was no sign of a 194 - 164 it was.

At the time, it complemented the other 16x services from the coalfields and offered something slightly different.
The 2/2a may render it redundant around Penshaw and Barnwell. The lack of interest in the 35 may help its case elsewhere.

I can't remember it going down Durham Road to be honest, but it did benefit me going down Chester Road.

Not sure it was ever likely to be a massive money spinner on either route to be honest.
Alongside the 16x services, it had the 220/222 and 535/536.
Chester Road had all of the local stuff, plus the 638, 777, X6, 775 and 778 for distance work.
