In December of 2012, The Shields Ferry launched on Facebook.

Nexus, which owns and operates the Ferry, is using Facebook as a fresh channel for communicating with customers. The Shields Ferry crossing, which links North Shields and South Shields, sees nearly half a million passenger journeys per year.

The Facebook page has since gained just under 350 likes, and it has proven to be massively successful. So far, the page seems to be a very nice community with very little drama caused (as opposed to Go North East's Facebook page which we all know very well). There are daily posts regarding the ferry's status and also various photos of the ferry shared frequently.

You can read more about the Facebook in an article Nexus released on their website on the link below:

Quote:Appeal for historic Shields Ferry photos

Nexus is appealing to the public for help in putting together a new archive of historic photos for the Shields Ferry’s new Facebook page.

Nexus already owns a huge amount of old photographs of the iconic cross-Tyne ferry service from down the years, and many of these are already on display on the Ferry’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/theshieldsferry

On Monday afternoon, passengers arriving at North Shields had the delight of being able to see Nexus' 'resident seal'. The RSPCA reassured Nexus that she was fine and was only resting.
On Wednesday night, she decided to swim away on the high tide, following her two-day long stay on the old slipway to the left hand side of the bridge.
Passengers arriving at North Shields this morning can have the pleasure of looking at our resident seal which has been here since yesterday afternoon.

A photo of the seal can be seen below. If the photo does not automatically enlarge, just click the thumbnail below to enlarge it. With thanks to "Annie's Guest House" on Facebook for providing the photo, which was originally released on the Facebook page itself:

Spirit of the Tyne now runs using a smart ticket machine. It is a recent addition, and, having travelled on the Ferry about a week ago, proved to be very difficult for passengers to adapt to - with some passengers having to go to the left, and others having to go to the right.

Nevertheless, photos have been added to "The Shields Ferry" official Facebook page, and can be seen on the following links here and here.

Quote:FERRY SERVICE INFORMATION FOR JULY 11TH AND 12TH

Ferry crossings on Thursday July 11th will be withdrawn from 4.15pm and a replacement bus service will be in operation.

On Friday, July 12th, the service will be suspended from 6pm and a replacement bus service in operation.

There will be crossings as normal all day on Saturday, July 13th.

Some Ferry services have had to be cancelled due to ongoing maintenance problems with Pride of the Tyne. We are working to rectify this as quickly as possible.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Assuming Kingsley's operate the replacement bus service, tomorrow could be an interesting one allocation-wise. I'm sure most of the MCV Evolutions are usually out on scholars.

Obviously feeling the need for some attention after its DFDS Seaways cousin went wandering the other night, there was a bit of an emergency on the last trip of the day, last night.
The ferry was reported to have floated down the river (encouraged by the wind) after an engine failure.

The Shields Ferry has been withdrawn from service due to a technical problem. This is affecting both ferries, Pride of the Tyne and Spirit of the Tyne.
A half hourly replacement bus service is in operation running non-stop between the Ferry Landings, South Shields and North Shields, via the Tyne Tunnel until further notice.
Two buses are in operation on the hour and on the half hour from each Ferry Landing.
Buses depart from South Shields Ferry Landing on River Drive (B1344) - just outside the BT Building.
Buses depart from North Shields Ferry Landing at the bus turning circle, just outside the landing area.
We are sorry for the inconvenience caused.
