I heard a couple of driver chatting at change over at the weekend and i am sure on driver said the actual " driving" part of their shift was under 50% of the total hours.  Is this correct as it seems a lot of dead, non money making hours to me?

I wish. Probably a very lucky driver with a shift that has a lot of layover time, a very rare thing.

That's not a break, that's a split shift. Most of the time they're free to go home in those 5 hours, but it can be paid through if it's thought an extra driver is needed hanging around.

a handful of our shifts are only 5hr 10min long in terms of driving hours, with 10 min for signing on and cashing in and 20 min for driving to and from relief points.
