Bus incident statement
At approximately 11.45 am today one of our electric vehicles on service 9 travelling into York was involved in a thermal incident on Stonebow in York.
Our driver was alerted by a warning light and immediately stopped the vehicle in a safe location. He quickly evacuated the vehicle carrying approximately a dozen customers. There are no reported injuries.
The incident was attended by the emergency services and the vehicle was recovered at approximately 1.15pm.
An immediate investigation has been launched.
Will Pearson, Business Manager of First York said, "I'd like to thank our driver and the emergency services for their swift action in evacuating customers and bringing this incident under control.
"Thermal incidents are rare but very serious. We have launched an immediate investigation into the cause of the incident."
"We operate 11 other Optare Versa Electric Vehicles in York and have successfully provided this zero emission service using six of them for over a year.
There have been no other thermal incidents with these vehicles in York nor indeed any reported thermal incidents on this type of vehicle outside York.
The investigation will aim to determine the cause of the incident which will also provide us with any recommendations going forward.
Of course during this period all our team will remain vigilant around safe operation of our buses and we have briefed all our team."
Following this incident we will continue to work closely with the vehicle manufacturer, undertaking further precautionary safety checks on the other 11 electric buses in the First York fleet.
