From a local Councillor-

Quote:I have received some disappointing news from DCC regarding the timescales for the new Bus Station development, which is now due to open in Spring 2023. DCC officers say:

The development of the new station has been progressing well but due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to temporarily stop work, with this currently programmed to restart after the Christmas holidays. The delay in the programme is likely to mean the bus station becoming operational to passengers in Spring 2023, although all re-programming options are being investigated. Any opportunities to bring forward the projected completion date will be considered where possible and practical.

The main reason for the pause in construction is structural works to the gable end of the Grade Listed Manse being required, which was exposed after the previous bus station was demolished. Structural engineers and surveyors are currently agreeing the best way to proceed, but the timescales are dictated and constrained by the statutory processes involved in party wall agreements.

All demolition works are complete, as are all ground investigations, ground water testing, soil testing and gas monitoring. Culvert diversion and replacement and utility diversions are also finalised. All opportunities to continue with the construction elements have been considered but are just not possible.

Bit of a view of the site from above from everyone's favourite bus seduction consultant: https://twitter.com/creatingdesire/statu...31b91VpCEw&s=19

Very disappointing news, its an absolute pain trying to get from one end of North Road to the other which I'll likely have to endure more often now the 7 has such a long layover and they like to boot you off practically on the roundabout.

Really not looking to waiting in the open this winter especially at night.

You get a good view from the top deck driving past.

If I have a long-ish wait at Durham I normally just pop into Spoons for a coffee or 3

I'd say North Road has been in managed decline for at least the past decade. Durham as a High Street is sadly dead, until there's a better vision than managed decline; they can't even fill those empty units on the Riverwalk with a constant footfall.

I was on a double decker going into Durham yesterday, first off all it seems it has been delayed, there were only 3-4 people onsite, 3 more than last time.

I noticed it will only have about 7-9 stands, with 5 layover ones. However the Milburngate stops have have either 10 or 11, and for that there is barely any room so how are they going to manage.

There’s been work on the foundations etc… as it takes time as there’s an old stream that runs under the bus station site

It’s the same number of stands, the layout is the same except less space for the passenger waiting area plus extra entrance to the station for the public

Yep and Arriva buses taking up all the stands as usual.

Council should of built the original proposed one at top of north road which was bigger instead of transferring the funds to build there HQ, still crappy bus station for a city of Durham

I agree, this bus station will be a nightmare.

Chances are,
X5/X15/16/16A to Stanley/Consett will all share 1 stand
X22/65/X20 To Sunderland/Metrocentre/Seaham will share 1 stand
X21/21/X20 To Brandon/Auckland/Langley will share 1 stand
X21/21 To NCL Will share 1 stand.
20/50/204 To South Shields/Sherburn

My concern to that is reduced passenger waiting areas, some of the queues would spill into others and the 7/X21 stand would sometimes spill outside prior to closure.

Stands for buses could be awkward as it was before, however scheduling could be easier or more difficult depending on what happens with timetables by the time the bus station opens, issue is on paper there *shouldn't* be any stand clashes but the reality is if anything is early/late even by a minute then everything goes out the window.

And if anything Durham services are always late, X22/65/20/21 always are late.

To be fair, you could have 20 stands, and Arriva would still manage to dump a bus on 18 of them.  Big Grin

They’d solve that by having sufficient layover bays, which there never was at Durham
