It looks like an extension of the Nottingham Tram to Derby and East Midlands airport, is being used as a sweetener as part of devolution plans for the East Midlands.

They reckon it could take an hour though. I'm pretty sure the Red Arrow service does it in half the time, and is already every 10 mins. I'd rather see the council use the money to subsidise the fares on it.

We kicked and screamed for a Wearside Metro extension, and most parts ended up getting shafted. Surrounding areas lost services, because the Metro was now taking a lot of the footfall. X2, X4 and X85 springs to mind.

I am not sure what benefits it will bring. The tram network is pretty small as it stands, with the bus network filling in the (big) gaps.
As well as the bus between Nottingham and Derby, there is already the train, which are mainly direct. Even with a change, there isn't much difference to the 30min trip.

East Midlands Parkway is chronically underused and the link with East Midlands airport is (from memory) hourly.
The station is linked with both Derby and Nottingham - so could assist with everything the tram is intended to do, but without the massive costs.


Totally get what you say about the metro, but the tax payers of Wearside were already contributing - well before the extension. Unlike this scheme, where the taxpayers of Derby have nowt to do with the existing tram system in Nottingham.
Obviously NCT had an interest in the tram and are focussing on the buses now. Wellglade have an interest in both now, so whatever happens will be thought out a lot better than it was up here - with our fragmented system.
