We've been discussing it in the electric thread and it's been interesting so I thought why not ask the question see what people think.

What's your favourite brand(s) and why?
What's your most hated brand(s) and why?
If you could change a brand what would you change?

Curious if we all think the same or all have totally different ideas. I'll start:

Favourite Brands:
Red Kite: It's straight to the point and actually brought some awareness to something beyond buses local to that area.
Drifter: Another with a link to the local area in terms of fishing and Seaham Harbor
Route 19: Really simple and it stood it's time - wouldn't be outdated now and it followed the A19 at the time.

Hated Brands:
Magic Roundabout: I don't get the point of the branding and links to anything, is there a roundabout on the route...?
Pronto - Yet again do I need to say much unless Bishop Auckland is the new italian pizza centre.
The Pulse - Bizarre brand which doesn't really mean anything and doesn't sound good neither.

For one I'd change - Coast and Country which will probably come to a surprise to some, this route is just crying for something about coal mines ie. resurrect The Waggonway brand. It pretty much connects ex pit villages and it would be nice to have something for them whereas Coast and Country is a bit corporate and I wouldn't count Stanley / Consett as the countryside whereas Sunderland City Centre is quite far from the coast (for a public transport user at least).
The majority of brands designed by Beacon Creative have always been hit and miss in my opinion. They're either very basic or too complex - and all look tacky and amateur. Small details seem to be overlooked and there isn't much messaging that attracts to car drivers, especially at speed. I think GNE have done the right thing and moved to Best Impressions who actually seem to put a bit more care and precision into the designs.

The worst recent ones from them seem to be Cobalt & Coast (tells me where the bus goes, I suppose?) and Little Coasters (which occasionally go to the coast!). Over the years, Saltwell Park was my favourite from them, but the route branding itself didn't really do it any favours.

Before Martijn came along, I think GNE relied too heavily on their brightly coloured buses to get attention, rather than what was actually written on them or inside them - it worked to an extent when branding was first introduced, but not so much now.
Favourite Brands: Silver Arrows, West Durham Swift, X67 (Park & Ride)
Hated Brands: Great Park & Ride, X36/X37,
One I'd Change: Venture (due to the fact that it needs to include 30-32 or be renamed to fit stanley & consett. E.g Derwentsider or Indigo Derwentside)
Pulse was supposed to represent it running through the heart of Gateshead, not to mention the QE link too, but it wasn't the greatest of brands. It replaced Kingfisher, and I believe was a result of a competition at the time? I can only imagine what kind of suggestions they got...

I used to quite like some of GNE's brands, but i think they've become quite dated. So its welcome that with investment, they're getting rid of some of them and going towards an Xlines spec. I think that in itself is worlds apart from anything else in the North East at the moment.

Outside of the North East, I quite like some of Best Impressions work but adamantly not all of it. The East Yorkshire brand refresh is really good. Same area, and I think Coastliner is one of the best around.

As for hated brands, I have a few. Arriva Frequenta stands out, as does the Fab 56, but both for different reasons. Frequenta just doesn't make any sense other than being 'frequent' - it only added a few different stickers on the same Arriva livery, and there wasn't much other promotion around it. Fab 56 was one of the first GNE brands iirc, and I think it was OK in its day, but its so dated now and needs to just go asap!

Special mention has to go to the yellow centurion brand that GNE briefly ran with - https://www.flickr.com/photos/danielgrah...289395/in/
I somehow don't think we'll see a repeat of that again.
Not sure if it counts as a brand but Wear Buses I thought was a good one. I say that mainly due to the memories of Going to Newcastle from Hartlepool on the X5 as a child. In fact I think that was the original wear Express service before it was brought back later for the X6 and X7 services. Another one I liked was East Durham. It said what area the services where for and the darts where perfect for it.

Ones I hate are indigo. It is just lazy as a brand name has no point to it and certainly does nothing to help get people onto the services.
Another one I hate and it might be controversial is X lines. To the ordinary person it will mean nothing. The name just sounds stupid. If they wanted a single brand name for the Express Services then they should have just brought back the Go Xpress name.

I think reviving the Centurion would of been better option as opposed Little Coasters as majority of those routes operate around wallsend

See, for me it depends if we go purely aesthetically or if we look at the meaning behind the routes as well.

Favourite brands:
The Castles Express - goes without saying!
X-Lines - I really do like the X-Lines brand, I just think they've gone a bit over the top with it. I wasn't a fan of it to start with, but it's really grown on me and does stand out. Whether or not it still stands out in a few months time when pretty much every bus running through Newcastle is X-Lines remains to be seen. The charcoal variant is my favourite, followed by Red, Dark Green, Light Green, Blue, Purple and Plum.
Little Coasters - Controversial I know, but I really like the design of it.

Hated brands:
Toonlink (Black and white): It just looked crap, I didn't mind the purple variant, but the black one, nah.
The 49 + The 9: A half arsed attempt at branding for the sake of branding.
Fab 56: I have the gift of sight, but when I see them, I wish I didn't
X66: Too much going on, you can't see through the windows
Durham Cathedral: It also look like it was designed in 5 minutes

Thing I'd change:
Not sure I'd really 'change' any brands, but if i had to, my changes would revolve around updating liveries to the current design.

Tyne Valley Ten - I'd go back to silver. Here's a quick mockup I did last year based on the Cobalt and Coast using elements from the current livery. Probably could have put more effort into it, but you get the idea.
[attachment=9547]
Drifter - Same thing again, here's a Photoshop mockup I did a while back when discussing it in another topic, but forgot about it!
[attachment=9550]
Northern - I'd have put the Northern livery on a Solo rather than a Versa. Would have looked better IMO

I would use that colour scheme for the new 53/54/58 buses as it looks very techified and very suited to a electric vehicle.

TVT looks mint although I'd tie it in with same graphics as Tynedale links. Drifter looks canny although looks messy with beach on the skirt. I think northern suit citaro more  Wink

To be fair, I think I may have been half way through a bottle of wine when I did the Drifter!
Does look considerably better without the beach like
[attachment=9554]

I'm not even going to try and put the Northern livery on a Citaro, it took me more hours than i care to admit to put it on the Solo!

Gotta keep the lighthouse too ??

Haha I do a lot worse after bottle of wine  Tongue
I always liked the Arrow brands. I think with the X1 being Red Arrows, the 4 should have been Blue Arrows as it ties in with it better. I should have tried harder to get a decent photo of all the Red Arrow B9s lined up on the Airshow P&R last year in some kind of V formation. Obviously there's not a chance now that they're getting phased out within the month and some of them are looking rather raggy.

Since this is related to the designs, I'm all over this post...

PAST

"What's your favourite brand(s) and why?"
• "X9|X10": it effectively represented the 'speed of light' that both routes intended to provide, and conveyed that message perfectly.
• "The Castles Express": the large landmark illustrations complimented the style of the 21's "The Angel" livery, showing the similarities of the two.
• "The Red Kite": in my view, the large red kite stock photo towards the back of both sides represented the 'red kite country' in a much more effective way than the new "X-lines" version ever will.
• "Wear Xpress": as much as the former X5 wasn't an express route, the large 'X' "parcel tape" vinyls clearly emphasised the express nature of the X6 and X7 routes.
• "The Blaydon Racer": fantastic local brand. Included the Geordie folk song along the sides with illustrations of runners. Perfect.
• "Red Arrows": as good as the new "X-lines X1" brand looks, "Red Arrows" was iconic.

"What's your most hated brand(s) and why?"
• "Fast Cats": just, no.
• "The Highwayman": horrible colour scheme. Boring. Bleurgh.
• "Toon Link" (purple version): bye. Black, white and orange version was much more fitting with NUFC etc.

PRESENT

"What's your favourite brand(s) and why?"
• "Drifter": perfectly denotes the bus drifting along the coast, with necessary seaside illustrations and a unique route branding typeface that has been retained.
• "Tyne Valley Ten": love the green colour used on it and the buntings around the top. Again, the landmark illustrations outline where the services pass through.
• "Green Arrow": emphasises the eco-friendliness of the vehicles. Fantastic colour scheme. Leaf in the logo is a creative approach to address the low emissions given out.
• "X-lines X1", "X-lines X21" and "X-lines X45/X46/X47": the consistency in the "X-lines" brand is good. Simple but effective. Use of landmarks to show where the routes pass through. Rear branding informing drivers behind of the benefits from using the service(s).
• "Prince Bishops": this has to be kept on in the 2019 format. Unique, purple and gold colour scheme. Name relates to the noble, sovereignty historical status of Durham and now obviously the shopping centre.
• "Black Cats": love the red and white colour scheme, which is basically what Sunderland is renowned for with SAFC.

"What's your most hated brand(s) and why?"
• "X-lines X9/X10": the use of coaches is just a massive no to me. The chevron at the front is vomit-worthy.
• "Little Coasters": a boring and tacky, typical blue, replacement of "indiGo – North Tyne".
• the overuse of the 2019 fleet livery. Absolutely.

All my opinion of course, so won't expect anyone to agree.
Not sure I've got a brand I dislike the most, but the favourites have to be the Superliner and ExpressLink brands.
I think they suited the Cxxx OCN Metrobuses (over the Olympians and VR's which also had the ExpressLink livery) and were of their age.
Sleek and effective.

Completely agree here mate. Loved the coach seats in those metrobuses as well as they were so comfortable. Loved their moquette as well.

Other previous brands I liked are: -

Go-Ahead Northern (Red and White)
VFM Buses
Wear Buses
Go-Ahead Gateshead Blue, Red and White
Metrocentre Supershuttle
Red Arrows and Silver Arrows
Washington Street Shuttle
Whey Aye 5-0
The Lime
Prince Bishops (used on the Solars)
The Waggonway
Doxford Clipper
Route 19 (The original version)
Cobalt Clipper

Past brands I disliked are: -

The Nine - purple livery with just the words, The Nine. So boring and unimaginative!
Laser - The logo was good but the livery boring!
East Durham
Yellow Bus
Bargain Bus
West Durham Swift
The Centurion
The Pulse
Crusader

Present brands I like are: -

X-Lines - A very attractive, classy looking brand. Looks very much like a premium brand and it really stands out.
Coaster and Drifter- fantastic looking seaside brands. Love them!
Tyne Valley Ten - love the shade of green used. Very smart looking brand and well suited to the more rural routes.
Black Cats
Toon Links
Durham Diamond
Prince Bishops - not as good as older version but still smart
CityLink
Venture
The Angel
Castles Express

Present brands I dislike are: -

Tynedale Express
Crusader
Cobalt and Coast

Brands I would change: -

Coast and Country - it doesn't go near enough to either the coast or country to justify this brand name.
Indigo - like the livery but the colour is more like a lilac/violet colour than indigo. I would change the brand name personally.
Fab Fifty Six - like the brand but it needs a refresh now. Would probably stick with orange as the main colour.
Connections 4 - nice but probably due an update
Favourite brand, I’ll stay old school.

I loved the simplicity of the Northern : Proud of our Routes, especially on the Optare Deltas and Handybuses.

Staying with Optare Delta, the original Metrocentre super shuttle design was innovative at the time

When the red, yellow and blue GNE logo came in it was so different and colourful that I really liked it.

Equally the OK livery, simple but it worked.

Disliked...

VFM.
The Pink Angel
Original Saltwell Park and Angel 24/7 liveries - so so so lazy.
Waggonway...forever tainted by DAFs

Most hated...the red Northern spare livery...I say livery. Just woeful half arsed attempt at whatever it was.
Brands I like
Most variations of X-lines won't say because we haven't seen every version of it on a bus.
I know this would break livery but I would have preferred a red kite to make half of an X on the X45/46/47 streetdecks

The Crusader wonder if they should bring back the crimson version of the brand

The Cosater
I like the little coasters even though only the 19 goes to the coastish

Colbat and Coast has grown on me

Previous brands I liked
Are South Tyne
Whey Aye 5-0
Tynetess Xpress
Weartees Xprees
Laser which tried to look like a premium brand

Brands I don't like
The 49
The 9 made a bit more to look like a brand
X66
Fab 56
It's amazing how many people have commented about The 9!

Lol.

My favourite was the magic roundabout. I hated the 9 to!

Current - i liked x lines but think its too much now. I like Prince bishops to... Don't like fab 56!
My favourite liveries are:
South Tyne on the cadets and versas
Cross Tyne SPDs on the 9/9A
2 Cities Express X23 coaches

Least favourite:
Cream Drifter

I would pay money to have a trip on one of them again. Don't think any survived, but if one turned up and was restored to original spec - seats, uprated engine, livery...

The 19 is probably the worst out the lot for the branding haha as it doesn't touch the Coaster and in the majority of the places it serves it's the only bus which doesn't actually go to the coast.

Seaton Delaval: X7 (Blyth), 57/57A (Whitley)
Bedlington Station: X21 (Newbiggin), 1 (Blyth), 2 (Blyth)
Cramlington: X8, X9, X10, X11 (Blyth), 57/57A (Whitley), 58 (Seaton Sluice) - 42 (Also Little Coaster), 43 and 54 don't but it's a minority.

Surprised at the responses here though mind, thought there would be consistancy but it seems like every livery has been liked by someone pretty much (bar the yellow Centurion).

Stagecoach's new livery is a masterclass in how not to design! The back is bloody awful
Liked liveries
The Orbit
Nine (not 'The 9')
The Loop
Highwayman
Original GNE livery
Pink Angel
Centurion (White)
Fab 57 worn by the Solars but didnt like it on the renowns for some reason
Citylink (Gold)
Crusader (Silver)
Drifter
Simplicity
South Tyne Links
North Tyne Links (Wallsend Links)
Original Cobalt Livery when it was just the 309
Blue Citylink
Corp 2016
Corp 2019
Rainbow Bus 2020
X-Lines (although a few too many Greens)
Disliked Liveries
Red Northern Livery
Yellow Blaydon Racers
Yellow Centurion Livery
Citylink Orange
Maroon Crusader
Waggonway
Green Angel
Little Coasters
Indigo (cus its actually pink)
White Cobalt Livery that 4911 wore
Since I've just been reminded of the atrocity that is the front of the X9/X10 coaches, I thought I'd have another play in Photoshop to see if I can figure something out that doesn't look so horrific!

Obviously they want to have some Purple on the front so passengers know it's the X9/X10 and not one of the numerous other X-lines services that use massive coaches, so I came up with this.

Looks a lot less awkward in my opinion
