GNE Nightbuses

Imo GNE should guarantee a connection between

N21 (towards NCL) & N56 (towards SUN)

N56 (towards SUN) & N60 (towards PKS)

N60 - Sunderland - Normal Route to Mill Inn - Dalton Park - Murton - Deneside - Seaham - Parkside Every 60 Mins PVR 2

N56 Sunderland the same till Concord - Washington - Same

N21 same

NX1 - Same except Upto Dalton park PVR of 3

N20 Sunderland - Durham PVR of 2 (Meet up with 60/56) Platforms CDE at Parklane

Also with Spider Man No way Home releasing X66 should run from the MetroCentre to Gateshead to connect with the 56/21, when it finishes.

I think the connection between N56/N60 should be 100% guaranteed.
Most of the 56s during the night are guaranteed a connection with the 60 because they're the same bus.

Not sure why the X66 should be introduced late for the cinema when there are cinemas in Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle?

The night 56 and 60 interwork so connections are technically already guaranteed.

afaik is only 00:00 & 01:00 are.

X66 should be for Metro-Gateshead when there are 00:00 premieres such as Spiderman. They can use the Crusader driver/bus which is meant to go out for the 05:03 South Sheilds Journey

There's no bus stop since the interchange will be shut and the demand is non existent.

If you were going to pick any route in Newcastle I'd oddly pick the 33. It's useless during the day as it runs through Metro areas but once you take the Metro away there's potential there linking Newcastle, Gosforth and the student area of Jesmond.

01:03, 02:03, and 03:03 60s run off a 56.

But the 04:00 doesn't which is a shame

It's very very rare that that 56 doesn't get back in time for that 60 though.

Yeah true, but then the next 60 isn't till 06:30, so that is a possible 250 min wait.

If GNE guaranteed the connection I would feel I lot more confident about getting a night bus. Reason I get a car instead of the 21/56

Get the 21 into Gateshead, connect with the 56 too big of a risk. Really they should be be all guaranteed connections.
What have the passenger numbers been like on the night buses since they were introduced?

N21 a few people per service.

60 a few

56 easily the highest.

Slightly surprised the 56 is easily the busiest given how busy the regular 21 can be during the day.

Yeah same.  I think 60/56 Definitely make some money, but 21 Unless Friday-Sunday.

But also not really that well advertised, £1 fares after 7pm I got on 3 separate buses for around 45 mins each. Loads got on not even knowing about it, so imagine how many people don't know about the Night Buses.

Any stats to back this up or just conjecture?

From past experience the N21 does a pretty roaring trade over weekends and is steady enough during the week

Bus times, I regularly check. ANd it seems N21 does maybe 3-4 on weekdays, weekends are a different story

Bus Times never actually seems remotely accurate though. Same as the GNE app which happily tells you the 21 is quiet on a match day as 3 fly throught not in service.

Bus Times is the other way around to the GNE app - it will often show buses busier (or full) than they actually are.

I think it's to do with some drivers not using the 'alight' function on the machines when a customer gets off - I don't often use Bus Times, but a few times buses have shown as 'full' when there's actually a fair few seats left.

i only found out on saturday that on th GNE appt you can report what the bus is like. the 28a was " quiet" but i actually got one of the last seats. I sent the appt this but by the time we got to town the appt was still saying quiet!

To be fair, I've yet to see a driver not use it when I get off.

I wonder if there's just a delay between Ticketer and BusTimes when it comes to passenger numbers as I've never seen it update in 'real time'

Absolute nonsense.

The 0330 21 off Newcastle was heaving apparently. Possibly due to the 0230 not running (allegedly).

There never seems to be any night buses ever mentioned in the short term journey cancellations list.
I'm sure they must have been cancelled at some point.

I know there has been a few cancellations with the 56/60 once or twice. And I believe there has been N21's about 30 mins lates.

Certainly appears to have been the case on Saturday. According to eldest constantopolous anyway.
Huge crowds and vulnerable lasses waiting for over an hour in the town.

There was one missed on Saturday, but nothing to do with the short term cancellations.

Due to Anti-social behaviour, a window was smashed in the Birtley area on its way into Newcastle.

One of the late northbound X21s was cancelled last night, I'm assuming due to antisocial behaviour, given that it was pulled over in Spennymoor surrounded by 4 police cars and at least a dozen police officers.

Thanks for clarifying.

Certainly can't be helped, but I wonder if there's something that could have been done to alert passengers. Particularly on a cold, winter night.
Do you not think that GNE maybe should have did I promotion for night buses for the 21, 56 & 60.

I saw something on FB about people not even knowing that there were night buses till last week and I wondered if especially with the 60 being one spare whether a livery, with the times it runs like Midnight till 5am would actually make people see it more than on Facebook.
It was the same when GNE put on the later X85’s.
Loads of people didn’t know they were running. No local leaflet drops, poster campaigns or adverts in the local paper.
there was an advert made but I never saw it on the tv, I think it may have been a YouTube only advert?

I think they could definitely have made something really cool out of the new livery on the 56. Also im not sure if its been discussed already but how come the 56 and 60 just stayed the 56 and 60?
