WHAT.
What the hell is the 354. Newcastle to North Shields. I'd expect it to be the 54 but that's Whitley Bay to Newcastle
While I am sad Stagecoach are not taking on the 51 to 55 , it is great news they are being covered in one guise or another

I do hope stagecoach fully take the 54. It would make the most sense since they already run it on evenings & Sundays

Or, conversely, make no sense at all if GNE are going to be operating something similar?

Are GNE taking on these commercially?
And who knows?

A registration for a 352 and 353 might show up tomorrow.....
I am waiting for our resident NT expert to come up with some interworking pattern....

Then 351 the following night....and we got a full hoose
This will look very silly if Arriva don't actually cancel their services ?

Well, I've been looking into my crystal ball and it suggests there may be changes south of the border coming next week.

The 54 (356/56) used to always be North Shields to Newcastle, the swap around was reletively recently with the 53 (343/344) being Whitley Bay to Cramlington / Morpeth.

It'll also be interesting to see if the 355 is the 55 or the old 355 with the 354 extending through to North Shields somehow as the number change is a bit pointless otherwise.

See: https://www.northeastbuses.co.uk/bygone/...er1981.pdf for 355.

You never know, it might be the return of 'Bargain Bus', rising like a phoenix from the ashes...

Wow a return of the 353 & 351 that would be some throwbacks

But I imagine the reason for the 354 going to North Shields has nothing to do with nostalgia for long-lost bus routes of yore. I would imagine it is because the 54 duplicates the 309 between Cobalt and Whitley Bay.

Interesting that never realised they used to be split and go right through. Just find it a bit bizarre them wanting to take on the 54 which has been a sinking ship for ages when they've pulled out their own routes in the area like the 317 which were always arguably stronger. Could get the 53 though which is quite a strong little route.

Sure we'll find out in time though.

Wonder if the 3 prefix indicates it's gonna be funded.
Nexus like using the old school numbering system on their funded routes.

Don't think Nexus can subsidise anything until the other routes are outright cancelled by Arriva, if I'm right, who knows tbh.

Out with the begging bowl again eh?

Surprised GNE aren't extending at least one of the new routes over to Team Valley to provide that much needed link between North Tyneside and Decathlon.

The Traffic Commissioners' website states that neither service is supported by subsidies.

I suppose the 54 doesn't really need replacing between New York and Whitley Bay, as the 309 already provides these links.

So I'm assuming the 354 will be the 53 route until New York, then continuing on to Newcastle via the 54 route. The 54 loadings aren't that bad between Newcastle and Killingworth, although it largely duplicates other services.

Question is though. What will replace the 53 between New York & Cramlington as that section is unique and isn't really cover by a straight forward service

52 follows it to Fern Drive & Camperdown to Killingworth then nothing round the forest Hall section then the Palmersvill to New York part. The 53 is a unique route in my opinion not really being duplicated by much

I'm sure that GNE have enough experience of trying to run a commercial service via Wiltshire Drive to avoid taking the 51 on commercially like avoiding the plague.

It was peak only, then off peak, then half hourly Mon-Sat daytime minibus (all as number 307) and none seemed to work.

If the 51 is replaced I can see it being a secured service (especially as the section Holystone to Whitley Bay already is).

That is indeed the question.........we'll have to wait and see won't we!

We might have to wait days, weeks, or even months before we know.

See I was thinking that but then what will happen with the 53 which is the strongest out of the routes around there. Agreed the Eastern side isn't needed though mind. Let's be honest though it could be anything.

Ignoring the Killingworth links, Fern Drive could be easily covered by the 57A or X8 or even both of them. They both double back on thereselves via Northumberland Business Park avoiding Moor Farm now anyway so wouldn't add any time to either route, there's not exactly anything in Annitsford and most areas are in walking distance from it.

I have a feeling Stagecoach will be eyeing up the 52 though, it's operationally completely out of area for GNE so they can dominate Newcastle to the Freeman and Killingworth pretty much, 38 extension possibly?

That would be a bit of a marathon

Or maybe the 307 might come back (in parts Big Grin)

The 354 is still definitely a mystery between Killingworth and Newcastle but with those via points, you'd think it was skipping the Gosforth end completely which would make sense as it could get the route under 60 minutes so it can be a clean PVR 3 interworking with the 355 (assuming it's all hourly). The 54 is a rather awkward 64 minutes atm.
