I'd say North Road has been in managed decline for at least the past decade. Durham as a High Street is sadly dead, until there's a better vision than managed decline; they can't even fill those empty units on the Riverwalk with a constant footfall.

RE: Durham Bus Stn - Keeiajs - 19 Dec 2021

I was on a double decker going into Durham yesterday, first off all it seems it has been delayed, there were only 3-4 people onsite, 3 more than last time.

I noticed it will only have about 7-9 stands, with 5 layover ones. However the Milburngate stops have have either 10 or 11, and for that there is barely any room so how are they going to manage.

There’s been work on the foundations etc… as it takes time as there’s an old stream that runs under the bus station site

It’s the same number of stands, the layout is the same except less space for the passenger waiting area plus extra entrance to the station for the public

That bus station is going to be rammed.

Yep and Arriva buses taking up all the stands as usual.

Council should of built the original proposed one at top of north road which was bigger instead of transferring the funds to build there HQ, still crappy bus station for a city of Durham

I agree, this bus station will be a nightmare.

Chances are,
X5/X15/16/16A to Stanley/Consett will all share 1 stand
X22/65/X20 To Sunderland/Metrocentre/Seaham will share 1 stand
X21/21/X20 To Brandon/Auckland/Langley will share 1 stand
X21/21 To NCL Will share 1 stand.
20/50/204 To South Shields/Sherburn

My concern to that is reduced passenger waiting areas, some of the queues would spill into others and the 7/X21 stand would sometimes spill outside prior to closure.

Stands for buses could be awkward as it was before, however scheduling could be easier or more difficult depending on what happens with timetables by the time the bus station opens, issue is on paper there *shouldn't* be any stand clashes but the reality is if anything is early/late even by a minute then everything goes out the window.

And if anything Durham services are always late, X22/65/20/21 always are late.

To be fair, you could have 20 stands, and Arriva would still manage to dump a bus on 18 of them.  Big Grin

RE: Durham Bus Stn - Wybus - 19 Dec 2021

They’d solve that by having sufficient layover bays, which there never was at Durham

RE: Durham Bus Stn - Unber43 - 16 Apr 2022

Anyone got a update on the work of this? Will it still be completed by September 2022?

Has any of that stuff that they say will happen in early 2022 actually happened though, it says construction would now be starting in March/April, but I can’t see anything

i think there is still issues with the river flow underneath the station

RE: Durham Bus Stn - Ambassador - 21 Apr 2022

If only there was some sort of planning and survey that could have predicted this

It will still be a dumping ground for Arriva buses, no extra bus stands, should of built the bus station in the original plans on top of north road, instead of diverting the funds to the new council HQ and then decide when built not to move in and then rent it out/give it to the university

They're selling it, not giving it away. It should never have been built there in the first place. Accessibility is awful.

RE: Durham Bus Stn - MetrolineGA1511 - 01 May 2023

The refurbished Durham Bus Station is due to open this summer, as is North Shields Interchange.

If both are open by late September I may see them both with an Explorer (or GNE day ticket) as I shall be passing through the area to/from my weekend in Edinburgh.

I know a bit off topic but there's new tickets coming out soon which will be much cheaper than the Explorer which covered all of Co. Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear for £6.80.

No doubt it'll be badly advertised for anyone outside the region.

Some details - https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/praise-north-east-bus-fare-26727413

Assuming the Explorer will still exist though for those crossing the Teesside boundary. Just thought I'd say.

Not just Teesside, explorers also valid into parts of North Yorkshire and of course across to Carlisle on the 685 - plus on the Metro and ferry

Thank you, as this is helpful news anyway.  It is cheaper than a Nexus Day ticket at £9.10.

I have now booked a night in September, specifically in South Shields.  I can check just beforehand whether either refurbished bus station is open or not.

I was due to pass through Newcastle on my way home from Edinburgh anyway.  I decided I prefer to stop off here even if neither is open than to miss out if they are open by then.

I would expect North Shields to be open by early September - Durham may be complete by then.
