'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - MurdnunoC - 01 Mar 2015

Partially inspired by a thread on Skyscraper City documenting the remnants of old signage appearing on buildings; a post made by Adam Malarkey (See here) showing bus stops retaining old company logos; and a posts made by Andreos and Simmy (see here) in the Bygone-Era revealing old Tyne & Wear PTE signage; I thought it would be interesting to start a thread about various pieces of bus-orientated infrastructure which have been forgotten about in some sense yet remain in situ (hence the use of the word 'ghost').

Hopefully, you'll see what I'm trying to get at here and I'll start with a couple of examples.

While out and about today, I came across an old Tyne & Wear PTE sign as well as two bus stops maintained by Nexus but not currently in use by any 'public' service (they may be used for scholars but does that really count?).

.jpg DSCN0155.JPG

The bus stop above is located in Coalburns which hasn't seen a bus service in quite some time. However, Nexus obviously maintain the bus stop for some reason despite not being in use. There is also another bus stop located on the opposite side of the road.

Anyone have any other examples?

This sign can still be found in Washington. Still attached, despite numerous repaints to the said lamppost.

Where is it located? Call me insane but I wouldn't mind trying to get to a photograph if the opportunity presents itself.

There's a 'secret' bus shelter located on Busty Bank between Rowlands Gill and Burnopfield. It's been consumed by undergrowth but I believe the actual shelter remains. I may try and get a shot tomorrow depending on the weather and providing its accessible.

It's located just off the Castle Rd/Cambrian Way junction in Oxclose, Washington.

There's one with the old NORTHERN legals on in Pelton Fell - I'll try and get a photo for you, Adam. Smile

Would this be the one you refer to in the thread containing Adam Malarkey's post? A really old one showing Northern General Transport?

I'm in Pelton quite a lot and I've noticed stops, mainly around Stella Gill/Newfield, which still display 'Northern' stickers from the 90s.

That's the one. Smile I'm sure there's loads around the area, but I just know for certain about this one at this specific stop.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - Adrian - 01 Mar 2015

I think the one at the top of Station Road, onto the junction with Chantry Road in West Rainton, still has the 'Northern' labelling on.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - Jimmi - 01 Mar 2015

As I said before a few places round Aycliffe especially round the industrial estate have United stickers on the bottom of lampposts. I will try and get some photos sometime this week if they are indeed still up.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - LeeCalder - 01 Mar 2015

There is a bus stop in the middle of Barley Mow (Norfolk Avenue) by the CodFather and paper shop. The bus stop is maintained although the last service there was the 23 /23A in about 2006

I think I know the one you mean.

Is it this one?

I've also found the bus stop I was on about in another thread on Ivyway in Pelton. I think it's been removed now.

That's the one. There used to be one on the other side, although it got removed after being validated.

Also, the old Nexus sign on it has been replaced by the new 'B - Buses' sign.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - Andreos1 - 02 Mar 2015

At the junction of Golf Course Road and Success Road, there are new flags and markings - despite nowt going along the stretch to The Beehive.

Forgot about the ones on Barley Mow.

Think I have mentioned the one at the edge of Lumley.
There were DCC ones on Drum Ind Est for years. Not sure if they're still there.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - omnicity4659 - 02 Mar 2015

There's a whole load of old Arriva flags around the Hirst Park area of Ashington. In between N/S Crossing and the N/S Road / Green Lane junction there are old Arriva flags displaying the X18. Plessey Woods on the bridge, another old Arriva flag, this time displaying the X31/X32/X33.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - Andreos1 - 03 Mar 2015

No idea if it is still there - but there was a TWPTE bus flag outside The Beaconsfield in Low Fell, well into the 90's.
Where is gtom when you need him, he could have had a look after his Sunday dalliances to The Cannon!

Would this be the one located on Beaconsfield Road?

To the best of my knowledge, the Beaconsfield Rd bus stop hasn't saw a regular service stop there for well over 35 years. A few works-services stopped there on the way down to the Valley but that's about it.

Yeah, that's the one.
There is (or was) a scholars service used it fairly recently, but no idea if the flag has been changed.

edit: There are no bus stops at all on Beaconsfield Road now. Just had a look on Google Maps.
The ones on Drum Ind Est, have been removed - but not sure if they were removed by official means.

If you look here, you can see it has been snapped off. The fixings are still attached to the lampost - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@54.877244,-1.585156,3a,75y,286.94h,79.46t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sl1sfr_N4V1F4ykA9l19g3g!2e0

Photo of a bus stop around Aycliffe Industrial Estate which is no longer in use despite the fact that the 5/5A passes it.

Also at this non stop is a United bus stop sticker on the lamppost.
.jpg DSC_0285[1].JPG

There was actually more of these United bus stop stickers round Aycliffe but many of them have now pretty much worn away now so you can't tell they were actually there anymore.

Think the stop for Bishop Auckland bound 5/5A's in Middridge still has a similar looking sticker on the bus shelter, but it's for Arriva.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - Andreos1 - 03 Mar 2015

https://goo.gl/maps/tNlVO. This one has had the flag changed recently. It had a Go Ahead Northern one on for a long time. Nowt has used it since the 231/735 were merged into the 21A (as far as I am aware).

 - https://goo.gl/maps/SqLgf. This hasn't had a service bus since the 177 was withdrawn circa 2006. There is a scholars bus uses the A183 though. It is a 'use both sides' stop.

https://goo.gl/maps/23wkh. Still in use. Has a Go Ahead Northern stop fixed to the brickwork and the DCC flag attached to the pole

The hidden bus-shelter on Busty Bank near Gibside.

.jpg DSCN0159.JPG

At a glance, it would appear to be just another overgrown hedge as the brickwork is not at all visible. However, on further inspection...

.jpg DSCN0161.JPG

Admittedly, not the best photo, but you can see the brickwork and the remains of a wooden bench inside the shelter itself.

I couldn't really venture any further into the shelter so that's the best I could achieve.

If I was still 15 years old and looking for somewhere to stay dry while downing a bottle of Pulse on a Friday night, I think that shelter would provide for my needs.

Here's an old Northern one from Wetherburn Avenue in Murton, as far as I know, there haven't been services down there for many, many years

Last time a scheduled service went round there was probably 20 years ago, the 149 used to go round there, the last time a bus of any kind went round was probably 2008 when Police had the top of Barnes Roar cordoned off to investigate a murder, I used the bus that day as well...

There are also 3 or 4 bus stops around Cornwall Estate despite not seeing use for at least 2 years...

Despite no physical bus stop, the bus stop markings on Burnip Road and Webb Avenue are still there, buses up those streets were stopped when the 154 became the 65

A bus stop in Dalton-le-Dale, I dont remember a bus ever going through there

I tried to do a little research in an attempt to find out if any service used that bus stop and I can't find anything.

There have been a number of local services over the years between Seaham and Murton. When bus services were deregulated in 1986, operators attempted to drum up new business by venturing into estates and villages without established public transport links. It's possible one of the local buses diverted into Dalton-le-Dale for a short while before being withdrawn, however, it's rare that bus stops were erected as many buses operated on a 'hail and ride' basis. For example, Hanover Estate in Winlaton has had a constant bus service since deregulation and is currently part of a main bus route, yet no bus stops have been erected on Hanover Driver, Silverdale Drive or Beverley Drive. Is it possible for a bus to turn around in Dalton-le-Dale or would the bus continue along Dene Road into Seaham? Have you ever noticed any scholar services going into Dalton-le-Dale?

Been having a think about this, and the 149 may have gone through there on a Sunday back in the Early 90's, a service which also served Wetherburn Ave, the stop mentioned earlier in the thread...

149 was jointly operated by Northern and Favourite(PM, Sunday and Bank Holidays in the early-mid 90's) and it could be that Sunday Services went through there to Seaham, it comes out at the bottom of Princess Road...

I dont think Scholars Services have ever gone through Dalton-le-Dale...

Will have a hunt around myself and see if I can find anything myself

I have seen those stops in Dalton le Dale a few times (forgetting about them) and could only guess that if a service bus hadn't been down there, either a scholars or workers service operated in the area.
Given the nature of the work around Seaham, the amount of workers buses that came from the pits and the distance from the main road - maybe that is why the stops are there.

There is a big car park in the area, which could have been used as a turning circle, although I have no idea how long that wooded area has been like that.

RE: 'Ghost' Bus Infrastructure - MurdnunoC - 11 Mar 2015

The Go-Ahead Group timetables are still viewable in the Bygone Era of the forum. I've had a look at the route of the 149 and it doesn't go into Dalton-le-Dale. The Times Inn is a timing point but, as you probably know, that's on the main road. As you correctly state, GAG operated the Mon-Sat daytime 149 service with the PM and Sunday service operated by Favourite.

The Stagecoach/Busways section is un-viewable with one of those '404 Request' messages popping up. As this section contains services operated by Favourite, I am unable to access the timetable for the 149 but it is there so you might be right about the Evening and Sunday service being routed differently.

I believe cbma06 provided the timetables for both operators. Presuming he doesn't read this, one of us could ask him to provide timetable again. If does read this, then perhaps he'll be kind enough to rescan the timetable for Favourite service 149 Wink
