Boxing Day Services
(26 Dec 2023, 10:03 pm)RobinHood wrote What changed this year was the lack of any information provided.

A 'proactive' operator can only include what is sent, by the deadlines it is needed.

We will have to agree to disagree - I know what I would have done had I worked for Arriva, but perhaps communication and working relationships with Local Authorities varies by operator.

In my view, a proactive operator would actively reach out to Local Authorities to ask the question, knowing fine well they have set a precedent in previous years to procure a service in Northumberland on Boxing Day. It would be odd of them to change their stance, especially with NUFC playing at home.

Fortunately, Arriva’s lack of comms to their customers didn’t seem to impact loadings significantly!

Looks like the Angels recovered post match. The 3.50 I got home was pretty empty and had 15 wait time at Eldon.

With most major retailers again closed on Boxing Day, it would be interesting to see how well used the services were without the match
I paid in much more than I normally would for a day shift, if you want comparison, however it would be about right for a standard early shift.

Ah that's interesting! Looking at the weather today the likes of next, johnlewis and m&s might not see the footfall they were hoping for!

Lack of trains on Boxing Day will help numbers too no doubt.
Wistfully stuck in the 90s

I don’t know about Newcastle but no lack of footfall at the arnison centre, this morning.

Im sure the metro has run a Saturday service the past few years on Boxing Day
RE: Boxing Day Services
Wonder if Durham CC & NECA will fund more cross border Boxing Day services from County Durham this year such as the full 21 (Durham), X21, X30, full 6 (to Stanley).
RE: Boxing Day Services
No doubt another shambles of a service as if we still live in 1800s without services after certain times, days with no services and when they do turn up will go past full...

Yes I know it's not nice working Xmas Day and NYD (I've done both before), but when you work in an industry that provides for the public you should expect to.

Don't think anything ran into County Durham last year (or was that the year prior?)

Will no doubt the usual mix of limited service offerings, although some may have to run a bit later especially from Newcastle with home match being a 15:00 kick off.

Feel offerings may continue to reduce in the next few years given more shops aren't opening up on Boxing Day.
RE: Boxing Day Services
Out of interest, what were Boxing Day services like in the 1970s, 1980s (both before and after deregulation) and 1990s? Did many services run on Boxing Day back then and were the ones running restricted to a daytime timetable? I never used to venture far from home on a Boxing Day so can't rmember if any services ran, especially in Washington where I live. I remember that many shops used to be closed on Boxing Day at one time and it seems like we are heading back that way.

Another year of the wrong services running. If we're going to waste public money on these it should be the

X7, X9, X11, X18, X21 and X22 running in SE Northumberland. It would mean literally everyone would have a bus service to Newcastle.

Instead, as usual, we've got 4 buses services serving South Cramlington and the East and West side with buggar all. Blyth being the same with Newsham with 2 buses an hour and the whole of North Blyth, Cowpen etc busless.

Similar to Burradon, Seaton Delaval, Annitsford, New Hartley, Seghill, Gosforth Park, East Cramlington Hospital have nothing at all.

It's not like these are basketcase routes as they're all fully commercial.

Why you complaining though. Arriva in 2020 ran the exact same services as Go North East do. Is there a demand for services from the likes of Annitsford, Seghill or even Burradon for that matter. I can't see it tbf. Most people these days spend boxing day at home now

Otherwise, all the same routes as previous years are running.  Except the X18 as mentioned already.

I notice if you go to X66 page and put 26/12/24, times appear.....so are they operating or are they not!

Maybe because I live in one of those corridors...

If your going to waste the money we pay on taxes then it would be nice to share the buses out rather than having 4 buses doing the exact same corridor give or take (43/X10/X11)

It's different being commercial as that's the operators choice.

Personally I don't think there should be any bus service on boxing day but that's another thread.

The Northumberland services will be tendered services, secured by Northumberland County Council.

Have you contacted the County Council with your suggestions?
RE: Boxing Day Services
Derwentside looks a disgrace considering there's a home match and the 6, X73 (okay maybe not that route), X45 and 47 all pass the MetroCentre too!

21/X21 also bad that it's not running past CLS! Shame on NECA, Durham CC and GoNE not working something out!

Idk what else to expect when NECA have left buses to Durham and Northumberland outside of T&W. This isn't going to change.

RE: Boxing Day Services
The level of service in Tyne and Wear, on the most part, doesn't seem to be too bad.

There is however a failure to acknowledge past mistakes, and running a half-hourly X1 getting folk to/from the Newcastle match, will be one of those mistakes.

The sensible option would be to run some football specials, taking the strain off of the regular services, but we don't seem to do 'out of the box thinking'

I'm sure I read somewhere the X50 would be running this year because of the match. Although, wasn't there a match last Boxing Day, and the services managed fine?

Surprised the X18 isn't running this year, and I don't know if the X66 is or not.

Presumably Stagecoach will be running their 7, 11, 30, 39/40 (40 curtailed at Walker), X47 and X88 as usual and the 308 contract? This means Great Park will have a service presumably, unlike when the Q3 went there?
RE: Boxing Day Services
It did look like demand was well maanged vs last year when Newcastle were at home and appears to be the case again.

Shopping isn't what it was on Boxing Day and doesn't really have the pull and realistically, you're not going to get a huge amount of services running when you look at cost vs demand vs availability of drivers

Judging by the empty terraces at the West ham game, NUFC could just hire a fleet of taxis Smile

Attendance was 52,094 on Monday night, so just short of capacity.
