It's political ideology at the expense of much more worthwhile pursuits. Like the *cough* Northern Powerhouse.

I wonder if the MPs of various flavours who have spearheaded have ever heard of the wonders of email and teleconferencing. If they really cared about improving the conditions leading to businesses growth we wouldn't only just be seeing just about adequate fibre broadband rolled out. There would also be investment in the infrastructure that gets people with money to spend and/or skills to offer into cities from surrounding areas.

One that hasnt been mentioned on here, is the announcement a few weeks back that Intercity West Coast operations will also include HS2 operations.

It might improve times between Newcastle and Nottingham but I can't see it improving journey times between Newcastle and London.

HS2 will be limited to Euston-Birmingham. Apparently this frees up £36bn for "hundreds of new transport projects in the North and the Midlands, and across the country". It remains to be seen whether this is new money, or the usual trick of recycling old money.

It would have been nice to get to Birmingham quite a bit quicker or personally Sheffield where my mother lives, and more capacity onto what is currently CrossCountry. Aye London isn't that much quicker but nicer high speed trains would have been nice too.

Yep. There was no reason we couldn't complete HS2 and still get the £2 bus fare cap, Leamside and dual the A1, I just don't believe it's an "either or" situation. In fact Leamside might've complimented HS2 quite well by taking some capacity off the ECML.
