Proposed changes to road network

Have a read but one of the proposals is for Percy Street to become bus only between Eldon Square Bus Station and Gallowgate in both directions. All the changes are quite radical though.

Honestly not sure about changing Percy Street to bus only between Eldon Square Bus Station and Gallowgate in both directions.... Newcastle roads is already as tight as they can, would just cause congestion else where in the city.

I'm not from the area but have used that road before and its a nightmare!

As someone who uses Eldon Square bus station daily, Percy Street isn't as bad as some make out. An important point is that the traffic light phasing and road layout will also be seeing radical changes. It's effectively a total redesign of the road network in City Centre North.

Some of that machinery in the Odeon needs to find its way into a museum, somewhere! It's beautiful (the architecture, itself, is meh).

Actually went to George's on Tuesday, for lunch, since it was my birthday (29 and a lot) and I was out with Husband. Chips were obviously frozen and fried in oil, but tasty but I had a lovely sweet piece of plaice, in a really light batter. They had a few teething problems on the bar and gave us our drinks free. Definitely well worth a visit. The loos, as yet unsullied by a Saturday night, are fabulous. Lots of amusing, quirky decor, artwork and fishy cushions. The package with the kids' menu is great because it comes as a folded hat!

Ironic that Bimbi's had a place underneath the Odeon. Wonder what became of the equipment in there!

Having taken some photos this afternoon on the reopened John Dobson Street, safe to say I can see a major traffic accident occurring on the junction at Laing Art Gallery/Library as the road is "tighter than a nuns fanny" as the saying goes, and I would deem the work done as unsatisfactory and quite frankly unsafe particularly during peak times as traffic is easily backed up in each direction and other factors could cause an accident e.g. Traffic Light Jumping being a prime example, furthermore witnessed a cyclist nearly get hit by an SNE Hybrid E400 as the bus turned onto New Bridge Street, personally don't think there was a need to pedestrianise it as much as they have to fit in the cycle path, and the road should be a lot wider than what it is.

You can't really judge it, yet, given the south end of John Dobson Street is still closed. Give it a chance!

That's not quite what they said. They said they meet DfT guidelines but the northbound ones aren't adequate. The southbound ones are fine and no changes are necessary. Fines will still be issued in the southbound direction.

Love the emotive language about shivering. While some bus shelters are halfway effective and keeping you dry, I've never known one keep me warm!

We've got some all metal shelters round here. Ugly as hell but seem to have resisted the best efforts of the local ne'er do wells to deconstruct them.

The plans for Newcastle City Centre have moved forward. The £3 million investment will see Blackett Street, the north end of Pilgrim Street and New Bridge Street closed to buses and taxis in the interim with hopes to fully pedestrianise in the future.

Rebuild or reuse Worswick Street bus station. Would ease a lot of pressure.

Who owns worswick bus station,is it still GNE, and what about nexus buying the site and car park behind it and build a new bus station,which would help take pressure off roads in newcastle

Think its council owned now, but it just needs a bit of TLC and could easily take all the Tyne Bridge/High Level services from GNE ANE and SNE

Rolleyes Rolleyes Rolleyes  Just needs a bit of TLC?  It would break pretty much every health, safety and accessibility rule in the book!  Never going to happen, and besides which, it's a bloody hike from there to town!  At least be realistic.  The intention is to ultimately build a new bus station on Durrant Road for south of Tyne bus routes (i.e. those that enter Newcastle via the Tyne Bridge).  But for now, the council are looking at introducing a bus loop.  I have no idea whether it will be clockwise or anti-clockwise but there are already some GNE drivers that access Eldon Square from the Haymarket direction.  I bet the same people who say this will be 'disastrous' are the same people who said it about the pedestrianisation of Northumberland Street.  Now who would even dream of reintroducing traffic on there?!?!
