(20 Oct 2021, 9:33 am)peter wrote Thanks for the info Dan! Nice to see those services being retained. Will certainly be interesting to see what happens next year when the DCC contracts are up for tender once again.

Amazing what those commercial wizards have done to the Chester - Houghton route and beyond.
Got rid of the 21a and have persevered with the same old since, threatening to withdraw it due to its commercial viability.
Rather than look at headway with the 78, promote the route, look at alternatives or tweaks - they're being bailed out. Again.

I get why DCC feel as though they need to step in, but I genuinely don't know how GNE have the nerve.
'aye mate, withdrawing the 71. We've basically killed it and have done nowt about reserecting it or giving it any sort of life support. If you want us to run it, you're gonna have to pay for it'.

42?? Is this the 42 that runs through north tyneside?? I can just about get away with different companies using the same number for different routes but surely GO north east dont have 2 services with the same number??? Even if they are in different parts of the region ( i could of course be completely of track with this having just read the last few posts!)

The new service is a Durham County Council contract and as such they have determined the service number. Would you expect GNE to not bid to operate the 40/41/42 services in Durham purely because they have services with the same number in a completely different part of the north east?

It's being the 42D (The Durham One)

October/November Service Changes
To be fair, GNE having the 42 and 42D at opposite sides of the network is probably less confusing than Arriva and GNE operating X21s in opposite directions from Eldon/Haymarket

Is it the 42D or 42?
The update also states the 40A will be replaced by a 41, but the timetable shows a 41D.

I had thought these D suffixes for the Durham Cathedral bus were internal only, so not entirely sure why the timetable section of the website is showing them. It's a bit confusing though!

Again the 33 in Newcastle is a Nexus contract so not a service number determined by GNE.

I reckon it will operate as the 42, like you say the cathedral buses don't run with a D-suffix on the destination, although it is shown on the timetable. Same with the Nexus 33 which shows as 33N. Agreed doesn't help confusion when the extra letters are shown on the timetable.

For as long as I can remember it's been referred to on the app the 40D, same with the 86D to Toft Hill, but it's only since the update to the new website that it's been listed on there.

Looking on the Internet Archive, it was just referred to as the '40 - Durham Cathedral Bus', right below the '40 - Little Coasters' on the old site

There's that, but there is the problem of reliability. I remember when one of the M services was extended to Lanchester it was quickly replaced by the 30 due to the reliability issues.

I wasn't saying you were - just thought I'd clarify after the confusion with regards to the 42 that both examples are the case of there being a commercial and a contracted service Smile

I suppose from a customer point of view though, they don’t know which is a local authority subsided bus. So any company having two 42 routes or two 33 routes is somewhat confusing. You can imagine a tweet saying “Service 42. The 12:41 from Durham Station isn’t operating” and a load of passengers in Wallsend thinking someone at GNE has confused service numbers around! We on here understand, that it’s out of the company’s control and GNE have avoided having two of its own commercial services sharing a service number.

Shouldn't do as the current 730 which it replaces only serves Quaking Houses on a night* (service 30 serves/terminates there in the daytime) and remains the same with the 6 extention to Lanchester

*except when they've had to pull the evening journeys from Quaking Houses because of issues with badly parked vehicles
