There is nothing new there the X21 is regularly becoming late. It be getting to Peterlee the same time as the X22, the question is will carry on too Sunderland or wait at Peterlee to start it journey back to Darlington. In my experiences at least, it is usually not more than a few minutes late, most of the times it has been in the region of 30 minutes is when there's been road works on the A167 in Darlington which affects all Darlington - Aycliffe services. I got the 14:20 from Sunderland this afternoon which arrived about 13 minutes late but I think this instance was down to the service having a new driver on it, unsurprisingly on this route he fell even further behind time, was about 20 minutes late by the time I got off in Newton Aycliffe. Must say that the X22 often tends to be late heading towards Middlesbrough on a morning, often in the region of 10 minutes late. As for the 22, I really feel for passengers including BusLoverMum who have to use this service on a regular basis, I rarely use it and I'm glad about that fact as some of my experiences of this service ain't positive, won't even entertain the idea of catching it from Sunderland or Dalton Park with the intention of connecting to the X21 at Peterlee as the few times I've attempted this, it hasn't gone smoothly, it usually ended up with me running to the opposite end of Park Lane to catch the 20 then connect to the 7 at Durham and this was before it was re-timed to run 5 minutes later. On the subject of Darlington services running late, I've used the 7 from Aycliffe to Durham three times this week and on all three occasions the service has been a minimum of 10 minutes late, on Saturday afternoon one arrived at my stop 20 minutes late and was over 30 minutes late by the time it reached Durham and on top of that another two 7s arrived in the space of two minutes, because of the delay it had to pick up multiple loadings of passengers, it really shouldn't take almost an hour to get to Durham from Aycliffe but it did! Or it leaves Darlington late due to it being a new driver on each departure, and they haven't got a driver to operate it (or s/he's come in late off their previous trip so are claiming their bait!) Darlington's alleged shortage of drivers certainly won't help matters, as any spare drivers will already be out on the road. I recently attempted to travel on the final service of the day through to Peterlee from Darlington on a Saturday afternoon. The bus was dumped in Darlington near the Arriva canteen, blinded up for 'X21 Peterlee' and duty board in the window of the bus confirmed it was the one I was waiting for. I waited for 15 minutes until the service's scheduled departure before deciding to press the bell down at the Arriva shop. After querying whether the service was going to operate (given that it was the last journey of the day operating to Peterlee), the bloke who opened the door didn't know and said he'd check to see if they could find a driver. About 5 minutes later, someone else came out and said that it would run. About 5 minutes after that, the driver eventually came (though didn't bother to check if anyone was waiting at the stand - assuming that everyone who was waiting had walked down to the shop where the bus was parked!) Kudos to the driver - despite leaving 25 minutes late, he got into Peterlee around 10 minutes late so made up about 15 minutes. The journey was, er.. fun.. to say the least! I think it’s a shortage of buses as well as drivers. If Arriva looked after it’s drivers then perhaps they would provide a better service. The one due to leave Sunderland at 13:07 has been more than 15 minutes later every day this week. After being late to pick littlun up twice, I've had to start catching the one before. Of course the 16:42 from Durham was on time because we arrived at the station just as it was leaving, thanks to the debacle with the 6. The driver waiting for the Barney bus was having a right old rant. Of course, it was races day, so there were lots of extra passengers waiting, no doubt wanting to pay full fair rather than the usual rash of concessionary passes and day tickets. I wrote to them in May and was sent an application pack which I returned on 29th May. I had heard nothing by the end of July so on the 31st I rang the number quoted. This was at 220pm on a Monday. I got a recorded message saying the line was only open Mon-Fri 9-5! It gave me numbers for bus enquiries, rail enquiries and the PR office. I therefore emailed Arriva the same day and the following day they replied saying they had forwarded my email to the relevant department. I then received another email (headed “Good afternoon NATHAN” (not my name)!) saying that the department they had forwarded it to did not deal with job vacancies! They gave me a number to ring. I did so on 17th August, only to get a voicemail inviting applicants to leave their name and address for an application pack. I left a message explaining the position but I had heard nothing since. So on 4th September I sent a letter to the MD. I have had no response to that either!
