RE: N21 Return - Andreos1 - 23 May 2021 (22 May 2021, 9:31 pm)atlantean560 wrote Stagecoach tried the N services twice, remember the first attempt as they picked up at central station and were using the brand new transbus E300 at the time . I think GNE are missing out on the Q3 evening services over the full route, given the popularity of the Ouseburn/quayside area I wonder if it is more to do with the over-reliance on the night time economy for those services not working. These new evening/later run and night time services have the potential to not only work with the night time economy, but also for those getting to/from work. You can't use day/week/month passes on them and they have a flat fare which is usually quite a bit more than the same fare would be on a regular day time service. Exactly that, and the fact that unless you live directly on the route of the night bus, it just doesn't make sense unless you fancy walking or getting a taxi to your house RE: N21 Return - Andreos1 - 23 May 2021 (23 May 2021, 11:36 am)big mac wrote I think part of the reason for night services not working must be the fact that in many cases they're not great value for money. Without a doubt pricing played a part. But if the town was quiet, the N21 was going to be quiet. That night time economy is a lot for one service to rely on. The City Centre routes are also important for these night buses. A taxi will turn up at your feet, so buses need to do the same. People are simply not going to walk 10 mins to a bus stop when they're full of drink. With the N56 for example; serving Grey Street, Dean Street and the Quayside, before heading over the Swing Bridge to Gateshead would be better than the daytime route. Or failing that; do the normal route but and serve the station bus stops, instead of St Nicholas Cathedral and the high level. Personally I think it might be more of the routes. The N20, N21, N56 and N58 we're all lucky as both ends of the routes had bars and a night time economy in Durham, Sunderland, Whitley Bay and Newcastle with Low Fell and Chester Le Street on the N21, Concord on the N56 and Houghton on the N20 The Stagecoach routes only have Newcastle so you might be lucky and pick up 10 passengers in Newcastle on the outbound journey but you can pretty much guarantee that the inbound journey would be dead and your not getting any intermediate journeys either. I'm not sure how expensive they were but your looking at least 20+ passengers from Newcastle to make it viable when you start to cost keeping a depot open, staff costs, lack of inbound / intermediate passengers etc. Sadly think the 4 and 60 are going to have similar problems as there's not exactly much between Concord and Houghton for the 4 (depends on Amazon really) and there's going to be very little traffic heading into Sunderland early in the morning from Seaham for the 60, reminds of the N58 which failed miserably, but hoping I'm wrong. I agree that the night time economy is important, but it's like putting your eggs in one basket. For all sending the 56 via the Quayside might pikc up a load one week, there's no guarantee it will pick up the next. (23 May 2021, 9:27 pm)Storx wrote Personally I think it might be more of the routes. The N20 didn't touch Houghton. Not sure what night time economy there is in Houghton tbf Certainly not of the legal variety. Going back 20+ years, the 194 actively avoided Fatfield because of the crowds coming out of the bars and pubs down there. The last few runs were diverted so that passengers didn't board at the end of the night. That was when the pubs down there were rammed. My own thoughts on the Amazon services are mixed. Part of me is pleased they're trying something new (or at least slightly different). The other part thinks that it will end up like the Npower/Rainton Bridge services when they first kicked off or the insistence on sending the 20 on an evening via Doxford International - despite the majority of the offices there being closed. For all the numbers working at Amazon/Follingsby and needing to go to/from work, there's no way the 4 needs to operate on that sort of frequency within that area. Absolutely, but more likely to pick up passengers than the usual daytime route in/out of Newcastle. You'd also be serving the places with popular taxi ranks, which goes back to my point about taxis turning up at your feet - and the convenience of that. RE: The return of Night Buses - Micheal Aaron - 24 May 2021 Wonder what they will use on the Night buses. Possibly for the N21 they might use one of the X21 X Lines buses as one seems to do a 21 trip while an Angel seems to do an X21 RE: The return of Night Buses - V514DFT - 24 May 2021 (24 May 2021, 9:21 am)Micheal Aaron wrote Wonder what they will use on the Night buses. Because it is the same as the daytime route, same with the 60. RE: The return of Night Buses - Ds1197 - 26 May 2021 there's three extra journeys on the 50/50A from saturday RE: The return of Night Buses - deanmachine - 26 May 2021 (26 May 2021, 10:54 am)Ds1197 wrote there's three extra journeys on the 50/50A from saturday Is the 50A going past Nissan new too? There's also been no announcement of fares, and judging by the Washington area routes, they look to be targeting factories. I think it might be regular fares, with the £1 single being valid 'till 3am. Hopefully it will be regular fares with day/week/monthly tickets being accepted. Also, hopefully this will apply on all of the night services as it would be a bit unfair if, for example, it was regular fares on the 56 and 60 but not the N21.
