I’m intrigued to see how this goes. Like the rest of the world, environment and emissions seem to have dropped right down the priority and view of the public and indeed government.
It has the risk of being another government funded folly but we shall see

I understand these are just new but surely the blue seats but with red head rests would look better on the refurbs of older stock rather than the contrasting red. A bit off topic but still.

As an aside, when the ex-route X1 Volvo B9TLs are refurbished, will they gain moquette like new buses or like East Yorkshire route 12/13 Volvo B9TLs?

Yes, they have - but without the vinyl sides (this adds a lot of time to the process, and is in turn a lot more expensive - cue the 'seat variation' police):

Welcome to the world of Go North East - for the last ten years at least, internal specification and offering has changed with every new vehicle order and/or refurbishment!
Some destinations are standard, others have colour route numbers, others are fully white.
Some buses have TFT monitors for their Next Stop Announcement visual, others have LED screens.
Some seats are blue moquette, others are e-leather, others are ‘proper’ leather.
Might as well continue the tradition!

Quite looking forward to seeing this VOLTRA spec and the livery. Quite an interesting choice of seat/headrest colours, but I bet look really good.

The red moquette looks so much fresher than the old blue one. I hadn't even noticed the vinyl sides were missing - maybe because the clashing colours of red and blue immediately grabs your attention.

At least you put people before profit and actually spend money to try and keep customers satisfied during their journey. That's the main thing and you should be proud of that.

Not to get too off topic but this is definitely about profit, or getting as near to profit as currently possible. GNE strategy seems to be investing in providing a better product rather than running on a shoestring is a way to entice and keep customers. In this respect Arriva are the other end of the scale and Stagecoach have maintained a fairly steady middle ground for a very long time.

Personally, my favourite interior was the 15-17 plate Streetlites and the 16 plate StreetDecks.
The seats on those still look as good as the day they were new, unlike the newer leather seats, they have the LED displays which are far better than the LCD screens as you can actually see them from the back of the bus, they feel a lot brighter because of the light blue walls, but the wood effect flooring adds a touch of warmth.

I'm not too sure about Stagecoach being middle ground and Arriva bottom mind. Arriva spend more money on refurbishments and tech than Stagecoach, okay some of it quite badly. I can't remember Stagecoach ever refurbishing a bus and tech wise they're by far the furthest behind infact they've just turned off WiFi to save money on their whole fleet give or take.
Stagecoach NE have some of the oldest buses in the whole Stagecoach fleet, the MANS and Tranbus Darts for starters and I don't believe either of them have been refurbished in their lifetime neither.

Didn't Stagecoach only start ordering NSAs last year? Even Arriva has had that for years!
As much as I love bashing Arriva, Stagecoach is the only operator that I completely refuse to travel with. If I need to travel somewhere that only Stagecoach cover, I'll just get a lift instead.
The few times I have used them, the service has been terrible and the vehicles have been awful. I've lost count of the times I've been walking to the Metrocentre and literally choked from the amount of black smoke coming out of whatever they shove on the 100.
At least Arriva tries to put lipstick on a pig by refurbishing vehicles with leather seats and USB ports
