Mapping - Andreos1 - 03 Sep 2013 It just came to me when my eldest was asking earlier on, about the amount of journeys I have taken by train (work or pleasure). I started trying to visually map these journeys and wondered if it was something that could be tied into others on here - to see what sort of pattern or trends emerged. Would anyone else be up for this? Obviously we would need to share the trips we have had (business or pleasure) and use a network rail map to illustrate the journeys. Just to get started (I'll start North and work my way South), trying no to repeat journeys or mention return journeys. * Glasgow Central - Gourock * Glasgow Central - Haymarket/Waverley via Shotts * Glasgow Central - Haymarket/Waverley via Motherwell * Glasgow Central Lower Level - Argyle Street * Glasgow Queen Street - Haymarket/Waverley via Falkirk * Haymarket/Waverley - Durham * Dundee - Darlington * Carlisle - Glasgow Central * Durham - Glasgow Central * Durham - Edinburgh * Durham - Newcastle * Chester le Street - Newcastle * Chester le Street - Leeds * Newcastle - Carlisle * Newcastle - Darlington * Newcastle - Saltburn * Metrocentre - Sunderland * Heworth - Middlesbrough * Sunderland - Middlesbrough * Sunderland - Stockton * Seaham - Stockton * Middlesbrough - Whitby * Middlesbrough - Saltburn * Redcar - Darlington * Redcar - Manchester Airport * Saltburn - Darlington * Saltburn - Redcar East and Central * Saltburn - Shildon * Eaglescliffe - York * Eaglescliffe - Sunderland * Middlesbrough - Picc * York - Durham * York - Newcastle * York - Chester le Street * York - Malton * York - Picc * Doncaster - Leeds * Doncaster - Retford * Leeds - Selby * Leeds - Carlisle * Leeds - Apperley Bridge * Apperley Bridge - Bradford * Durham - Kings x * Durham/Chester le Street - Sheffield (via Doncaster) * Durham - Sheffield (via Leeds) * Durham - Chesterfield * Durham - Doncaster * Durham - Grantham * Durham - Peterborough * Durham - Newark * Durham - New Street (both XC routes and via Darnell on the 'Old Road') * Durham - Reading * Durham - Oxford * Durham - Leeds * Durham - Picc * Durham - Vic * Durham - Kirkaldy * Kirkaldy - Newcastle * Durham - Leuchars * Durham - Alnmouth * Leuchars - Newcastle * Leeds - Kings x * Doncaster - Kings x * Leeds - Crossflats * Chesterfield/Sheffield - Nottingham * Nottingham - Grantham * Lincoln - Skegness (via Sleaford) * Peterborough - Kings x * Newark - Lincoln * Sleaford - Lincoln * Metheringham - Lincoln * Retford - Lincoln * Lincoln - Sheffield * Picc - Stoke * Woking - Waterloo * Woking - Clapham Junction/Vauxhall * Hook - Waterloo * Hook - Basingstoke * Heathrow - Paddington * Basingstoke - Andover * Basingstoke - Reading * Basingstoke - Durham * Basingstoke - Winchfield * Waterloo - Winchfield * Paddington - Reading * Paddington - Oxford * Fenchurch St - Southend * Liverpool St - Southend * Didcot - Oxford * Oxford - Cotswold Line (can't remember station) * Oxford - Marylebone * Oxford - New St (via Cov) * New St - Longbridge Foreign train travel Bergen - Voss - Flam Schiphol - Centraal Centraal - Zandvoort Amsterdam Tram Prague Metro Berlin Underground Berlin Tram Dublin Tram (haven't included native underground or trams) Palma - Binisallem Malaga - Airport RE: Mapping - Adam - 04 Sep 2013 All of my trips on the train I can recall of are as follows: * Newcastle - Aberdeen * Newcastle - Glasgow Central (via Edinburgh) * Newcastle - Edinburgh Waverley * Newcastle - Carlisle * Newcastle - Corbridge * Newcastle - Darlington * Newcastle - Middlesbrough * Newcastle - York (many, many times) * Newcastle - Manchester Airport * Newcastle - Derby (via Doncaster going there, via Sheffield coming back) * Newcastle - London King's Cross * MetroCentre - Corbridge * Middlesbrough - Grosmont * Darlington - Shildon * Aberdeen - Edinburgh Waverley * Manchester Airport - York * Derby - Whatstandwell * Carlisle - Preston I think that's it. Hopefully a few more can add their journeys too RE: Mapping - Dan - 06 Sep 2013 (05 Sep 2013, 8:49 pm)Andreos1 wrote There are definitely some patterns emerging here... I keep adding this to my today's "to do list" and manage to forget daily. I'll do mine whilst on the bus going to school or while I am indeed in school later. RE: Mapping - Dan - 06 Sep 2013 I'll stick to my more memorable train journeys from this year alone - there would be far too many, otherwise! * SUNDERLAND - HEWORTH * SUNDERLAND - NEWCASTLE * SUNDERLAND - METROCENTRE * SUNDERLAND - HEXHAM * SUNDERLAND - LONDON KINGS CROSS * SUNDERLAND - YORK * HARTLEPOOL - SUNDERLAND * HEWORTH - SUNDERLAND * HEWORTH - NEWCASTLE * HEWORTH - METROCENTRE * NEWCASTLE - SUNDERLAND * NEWCASTLE - HEWORTH * NEWCASTLE - CARLISLE * NEWCASTLE - EDINBURGH WAVERLEY * METROCENTRE - SUNDERLAND * METROCENTRE - HEXHAM * HEXHAM - NEWCASTLE * HEXHAM - CARLISLE * CARLISLE - DUMFRIES * CARLISLE - HEXHAM * CARLISLE - NEWCASTLE * CARLISLE - LEEDS * CARLISLE - PRESTON * CARLISLE - LANCASTER * CARLISLE - MANCHESTER (can't remember which station now!) * CARLISLE - OXENHOLME * OXENHOLME - WINDERMERE * WINDERMERE - KENDAL * KENDAL - OXENHOLME * DUMFRIES - CARLISLE * LEEDS - MANCHESTER * PRESTON - WIGAN * PRESTON - BLACKPOOL PLEASURE BEACH Also had trips to Liverpool, Chester and Warrington around the same time as the above, but really can't remember the specific journeys now. * LONDON VICTORIA - BRIGHTON So many more... I imagine my train journeys will drastically reduce in number from next month though - the ticket price will soar from becoming an 'adult' from a 'child'. I may have mentioned one or two return journeys above. A lot of the journeys have just been duplicated over time however - sometimes only travelling in one direction. I find that I often just use familiar trains rather than go on new ones..! So much detail. Obviously it will be out of date in a few weeks, but it may assist in the initial idea I had nearly two years ago! RE: Mapping - Andreos1 - 22 May 2019 Www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-48365417 Aside from the big brother concerns, I found the images from the 2016 pilot fascinating to look at. Having travelled via King's Cross and Waterloo many times, it's interesting to see how they map usage between the two stations. Amongst others, I've done the Euston walk and changed Northern Line trains at Euston and also got off at Vauxhall a couple of times, but much prefer the change at Bank. |
