(12 Jan 2016, 12:21 pm)Dan No, it's not a mistake.

I'd assume this is what ASDA wanted Go North East to show, as this is what the commercial department requested was shown on the display.

I'm not too sure where "Sed'field" is - could you advise?

As a person who is literate in English, I'm sure you know that ' denotes an abbreviation (unless of course your post was a snide comment)

RE: Go North East: Latest News & Discussion - January 2016 - palatine3833 - 13 Jan 2016

(13 Jan 2016, 9:22 am)Dan Obviously my original post was tongue-in-cheek, and I knew it was an abbreviation of Sedgefield.

Bus operators use via points to make passengers aware of the places that service calls at, before reaching the terminal point. The use of via points is also an effective way of marketing the service "on the go" - potential customers who are using other means of transportation (car, walking, etc) may not be aware that the service calls at those locations, and may realise that the service may be worth trying out.

Abbreviated via points are of little to no use to potential customers who aren't familiar with the bus company's network of services. There is no requirement to only use one page on a destination display (indeed, several services in Durham use two or three if I recall correctly), so makes very little sense (in my opinion), not to take advantage of the destination display's full capabilities.

That was obviously just a hypothesis, rather than confirmed information!  Wink

Since you believe that this is not a sensible way of advising tourists of areas they are unaware of, would you like to take up your gripe with the Highways Agency also?  I've lost count the amount of times I have passed signs denoting places using abbreviations (M'boro, S'ton, D'ham, Ch-l-St) - are these all incorrect too?

Not too sure where I said an abbreviation was 'incorrect', deary..!  Rolleyes

You were implying that it was an incorrect way of doing things though Angel

Certainly wasn't implying anything! I was giving my opinion that it "makes very little sense" to use an abbreviation unnecessarily on a destination display. The only 'correct' way of making a destination is to include all relevant information to suit the bus operator's commercial needs - the styling is irrelevant. If Arriva thinks that abbreviating locations served on the route of a service meets their commercial needs, so be it.

I was fairly explicit in my previous response to Lee - as you have such an avid interest in the destination displays of other operators, I thought you'd like to look closer to home at Arriva's destination displays (which certainly aren't perfect!)  Wink

In my personal opinion, I would prefer fewer via points (rather than the 20 to South Shields which seems to take an eternity to scroll).  The destination screen is only there to reinforce information which is available at bus stops, and (in cases of route branded vehicles) key points on the side of the vehicles.  I don't agree with the X12s showing 'Durham for Middlesbrough' then 'Durham via Chester-le-Street' - it should be showing a static 'for Middlesbrough' imo, but what do I know?  As I'm constantly reminded, I'm 'just a driver' Tongue

Not as bad as putting a taxi on a public service, which GCT did.
