RE: Trains - Andreos1 - 11 Oct 2014

Not sure if many are aware or have seen it, but the new train, training facility alongside the Felling Bypass on the old Van Hee site, is coming along.
Passed it the other night, to see they have a small track which runs alongside the building.

Quite impressive and quite a change from its previous life as a warehouse and then storage facility.
Just to keep the 'bus theme', there were several preserved buses stored there for a short while, a few years back.

(25 Aug 2014, 4:13 pm)Marcus Yeah, I'm just a much a railway enthusiast as I am a bus enthusiast, although I don't use forums and stuff for trains like I do with buses. It would be best to ask a die hard train guy on this one, but I was standing train-spotting at Chester one Saturday afternoon and two old guys with cameras when an East Coast Class 43 came into view and raced past, the two men didn't get their cameras out and stood back. Once they could hear each other again, they said they hated Class 43s because of Jimmy Savile and the 'this is the age of the train' ads back in the late 20th century. That put a smile on my face. Tongue

If in doubt, blame J-Sav, like Margaret Thatcher, that gets blamed for everything

How many of you have these thoughts?
Quiet coach/rear carriage everytime (unless 1st class is cheap!).

My typical thoughts when boarding a train are.....

1) I hope the train doesn't fail in any way
2) I hope there are no terrorists get on (I'm deadly serious, don't you worry about it when you get on a plane?)
3) I hope there are some free seats in the quiet coach
4) I hope there are no O-APs to discriminate me, a child, travelling alone on a train!
5) I hope it's East Coast! Tongue

RE: Trains - Andreos1 - 11 Nov 2014

Although not worried about terrorists, I have wondered why trains (and ferries) have never been targeted.

Can't begin to imagine the sort of security measures that would need to be put into place (like airports) at a railway station.

Maybe start with bag checks?

@marcus
Aye, but how long would you need to 'check in'?

@aureolin
Sorry, should have clarified I meant the intercity stuff. Obviously there was Madrid, there has been the tube etc.

Been reported as a broken rail.

RE: Trains - Adam - 24 Nov 2014

Found this. Rumours are circulating that Eurostar have won the East Coast franchise, leading to a fall in shares in First Group.

Does anyone know when an official announcement is to be made about who's gained the franchise?

In all honesty, and because of the speculation, I want (or wanted) to see Virgin get it. Don't really know why. Tongue

Not quite sure what to make of this, but I suppose it's possible that Eurostar have indeed won the bid.

Without wanting to spark up another debate about privatisation/nationalisation, I've always been against the idea of reprivatising the line. In my experience, East Coast have been better than National Express, and EC have continuously made a decent profit which of course goes straight to the Government rather than private stakeholders.

RE: Trains - Andreos1 - 25 Nov 2014

(25 Nov 2014, 10:41 am)Scott But the line is starved of investment - you no longer get free wifi, and the trains are knackered. Virgin replaced all the trains on the West Coast mainline when they took on that franchise. Orders have been announced for new Hitachi trains, but that factory isn't finsihed yet and the trains are at least 3-5 years away.

The new fleet of trains are coming whoever the new toc is.
It just means whoever the toc is, will benefit from any knock on effect.

There is talk of the 'spark effect' on the Tyne Valley line. Pretty sure there is similar correlation with new train sets too.

RE: Trains - Andreos1 - 25 Nov 2014

(25 Nov 2014, 12:30 pm)Scott By spark effect do you mean that new trains on the ECML will encourage more passengers to use the train, and therefore use the Tyne Valley line to get to the ECML?

There may be a connection, but in terms of the 'spark effect' on the Tyne Valley line, it is to do with electrification on that line and numbers increasing as a result.

I agree, in my opinion East Coast are very professional, and as you say, the profit all goes towards the government, rather than stakeholders. Smile

Didn't like National Express, but I did like GNER. However, one thing we can all agree on, all 3 combined have done 10 times better than CrossStinky's pathetic services! Tongue
