Stagecoach Sunderland
I didn't realise any SC Sunderland bus went into Park Lane, I thought they only came in when theyd been in an accident like someone broke a window or driver needed the toilet.

However there is a 16 board which pulls into Park lane once a day, anyone know why this is?

I’m not sure if there are still other services or if it’s just the 16 now (but there certainly used to be others), but they terminate at Park Lane on a night before continuing to the north Sunderland estates at around 23:00.

This is historical for Sunderland, and the tradition is believed to have had roots to the days of tram operation in Sunderland. Back then, there would be a line-up of trams in Fawcett Street waiting for the whistle to send some northwards towards Southwick, Fulwell and Seaburn and some southwards towards Villette Road, Grangetown, Durham Road or Kayll Road.

This continued into the 1970s when the point inspector in the Central Bus Station would blow their whistle spot on 11pm and every last bus would shut its doors and race to the outer estates and back to either Hylton Road or Fulwell depots and in later years the Wheatsheaf.

Didn't the E service leave from the old bus station - there certainly did back in the 80s

I think it was about May 2017. I only remember that as it's when I started working for GNE and it meant I had to walk to Fawcett Street to get my bus home, the E1, rather than getting it in Park Lane.

That'll be about right, i had to get a party costume for my sons 5th birthday party from Sunderland, and i'd  get off the Metro at Sunderland but get back on at Park Lane, and the E's were running into the Interchange back then, would of been end of March/ early April
Kind Regards

You can't just leave it at that.

We need to know more about this party costume.

Looking back at old timetables, it was the June 2027 changes when the Es were curtailed at Fawcett Street (4 June 2017)

When Park Lane Interchange first opened in May 1999 pretty much every Stagecoach service stopped there on their southbound run, with northbound service stopping in Vine Place.

Does anyone know when they stopped serving the interchange?

To avoid having to pay the fees to Nexus to use the station.  They do the same in Newcastle etc with most buses using Blackett Street etc instead of Eldon Square or the Haymarket.

What i never understood about this at the time, and even now.  For years Stagecoach/Busways jad used the Central Bus Station in Sunderland which was either PTE/Nexus managed just the same, but rhey never pulled out of there.   Park Lane was purely on the wrong place and the fees was a 'reason' to pull out.

Nexus, usually works for timetables but it can be buggy (on wayback)
