Rather than have a thread for horse racing, one for boxing, another for darts, with more for mud wrestling and tiddlywinks - is it worth having a 'general' sports thread, for the sports which aren't as popular and possibly don't need their own?

If some of the lesser used threads could be merged with this one, it may help tidy up the section too.

Anyway, is anyone off to Plate Weekend?
Hopefully the weather will stay dry this weekend coming - for a change.
The Hoppings and The Plate usually bring rain!

Competitors in badminton and shooting from South Atlantic island Saint Helena began their journey to Glasgow by one of the last remaining Royal Mail ships - RMS Saint Helena. The remote island, where Napoleon was exiled to, currently has no airstrip. Until Saint Helena's first airport opens in 2016, the only way in or out is by sea.

Whilst the Commonwealth Games may be the poor relation to some events, stories like that from the BBC website are great and show how determined some places are to get their moment in the spotlight

Some decent tunes being played at the opening to the Commonwealth Games.

A few I've noticed so far:

KLF - What Time is Love
SL2 - On a Ragga Tip
FSOL - Papua New Guinea

Looks like someone has unearthed their Essential Hardcore/Essential Rave '91 CD from the depths of their attic!

I used to make it a regular Saturday thing with my late grandad, to watch the horse racing. Been ages since a did anything, even before he died we hadn't done any betting in a year +!

I remember we used to do a Red Robin (something like that, don't remember the different types of slips) every Saturday, and we'd divide what we won between the two of us.

One time, I chose one horse, against his will, which was at about 50-1, but because it was called Rhys something, which is the same name as my best friend, who has autism. I thought if a horse named after him won a race it might put a smile on his face - if I recall his pet parrot had just died....

Unbelievably - it won, and we got £426!

More quirks from Glasgow - the Sri Lankan cycling team have been out practicing for their events, by taking to the m74...

Mention of it (along with photos in todays Metro).

This is likely the WORST decision ever to happen on a Rugby field!

I'm a bit gutted it wasn't a fight until the end, but it doesn't take anything away from Lewis' achievement. Fantastic to see a British champion again.

(10 Mar 2015, 10:39 pm)Adam First day of the Cheltenham Festival today. Put a treble on at the bookies during my lunch break. Had Un De Sceaux (won at 4/6F), followed by Faugheen (won at 4/5F), and Annie Power (was 1/3F) but it fell at the final fence, cheating me out of £20 odd Sad

Myself and citaro5284 were just talking about the Cheltenham Festival the other day.......weren't we? Big Grin

Used to put bets on with my grandad when he was still alive, nothing serious, just a couple of bets at £1 per horse. Sometimes a Lucky 15.

Looking forward to the Grand National. Wink The race that got me into horses with him a few years ago!

Just checked the runners for this year's National...I recognise a popular one is one my grandad used to talk about a bit - Teaforthree.

Odds looks good, even though I think it unseated its jockey last year, I recall it came in the first five over the finish line in 2013.

Might consider that.

(11 Mar 2015, 6:05 am)citaro5284 Do you not do a Lucky 15....4 horses, 15 bets, at least you get something back even if 1 wins, I do them all the time.

On an even bet note.....Formula 1 returns this weekend, come on Lewis  Big Grin

Fourfold for me yesterday.
Douvain, Faugheen, Un De Sceaux and Annie Power.
Gutted about Annie Power like.

Can't do F1, but love BTCC.

(11 Mar 2015, 12:36 pm)citaro5284 Shame on you, but I agree with BTCC, just not keen on Jason Plato

I know a lot of people (inc drivers) don't like him, but I don't have a problem with him.
He brings an attitude into the races, that can bring that extra edge or incident - which is why I like BTCC. It has a rawness that F1 just doesn't have.

Plus, we can all pretend we're in a touring car, when we are bombing around in our hatchbacks Wink

Never done a lucky 15 before, but I've just put this on for tomorrow.

Apache Stronghold in the 1.30
Regal Encore in the 2.05
Ma Filleule in the 2.40
Saphir Du Rheu in the 3.20

Also got Chelsea, Bayern and Hibs to all win tonight, with over 2.5 goals in each game.

Bayern won 7-0.
PSG and Chelsea are in extra time, with one goal a piece.
Hibernian won 2-1

So that's a average four goals in each game, and if Chelsea win then you've won Big Grin

Nah - football betting is generally over 90 mins only, unless it's a special bet. So the treble has fell on that result.
