20/20a - Durham - Town End Farm on 10 min combined frequency. Circular around North Sunderland Estates and Queen Alexandra Bridge or Fawcett Street.
This will maintain connections to North Sunderland Estates, whilst not hitting traffic issues it would extending to Shields.
35 - Shields to Low Moorsley via Hospital and Durham Road on 20 min frequency
Offers alternative to 20/20a along Durham Road, speeds journeys up between various points. Encourages use on service between Sunderland and Houghton.
35a - Shields to Houghton via Burnside, Silksworth and Hospital on 20 min frequency
Connections maintained between various points, lost with introduction of quicker 35. Operates between Park Lane and Silksworth at opposite ends of clock to 2/2a, offering a frequent service between the two points.
X35 - Hartlepool - Sunderland on half hourly frequency.
Returning to previous workings.
X36 - Hartlepool - Sunderland for Newcastle via A19, Dalton Park, Doxford Park and Durham Road to current route on hourly frequency.
Marketed as through service. New links opened, existing links maintained/extended.
X37 - Peterlee - Newcastle via X7 route and then 56 route to Nissan, A19/A184 on hourly frequency.
Marketed as through service, complementing X7 and offering alternative to 56 in Sunderland.
I haven't worked out PVR's, timings etc - only looking at this, from a passenger perspective.

and the 735 Newcastle-Chester-Le-Street-Fence Houses-Houghton, both providing a 30 minute service. 735 used to go through Houghton to Seaham but wasn't profitable for Northern, so the Houghton to Seaham had to be secured with a 148 service.

The 735 went through Lumley.
There may have been the odd exception to that over the years like.
The old stops which the 231 called at are still standing - flags and shelters.
edit: Just to clarify - meant the stretch between Castle Dene and Back Lane on Lumley New Road.

Due to the narrow road leading out onto the main road next to the Co-op, I am guessing it did some sort of loop around Middlefield.
(10 Dec 2014, 9:42 pm)AdamY wrote I think it probably came up Ernest Street (where the post-office is now) and used Ivyway to loop back round to the main road. IIRC, the stop was located on the South-side of Ivyway, and I think Ernest Street probably could've accommodated a bus in the past.
