(11 Feb 2015, 11:00 pm)chrisnorthern It's a long-time survival of competition years ago between Busways and a firm called Catch-a-Bus, who were based at East Boldon. They mainly operated local services in South Shields but also had a route between South Shields and Sunderland, using route number 6. Busways' retaliation was numbered E6 to match the Catch-a-Bus number.
This would be in the 1989-1993 period if I remember correctly. There was also an E3 for a short time. If I can find the details of this route anywhere, I'll post them tomorrow.
Hope this helps,
Chris

(11 Feb 2015, 8:51 pm)bertibassett That wouldn't work. Both the 37 and 38 get the same time to run from the boro, the problem is the 37 goes further hence what would seem a lot of time for the 38. If you run a 37 through the glebe what about junction road? or you would put an extra 10 minutes on the journey if you go down junction road and do a loop around the glebe, then you have a problem of all those lovely pensioners with accute 20/20 vision getting on the bus to the hospital thinking its going to the town only they dont read the destination, they just see the number, some folk just see the bus....dohI know what you are saying but it would also give people on the Glebe a bus to the hospital If it ran via the Glebe bothways they would soon realise one is going to the hospital and the other to Middlesbrough As for the ring road its just pointless especially now the 38 appears to do 2 laps of Ashton Road so just go via Junction road both ways as it used to be I realise what you are saying about the extra 10 minutes journey time would a joint 37/38 work on an evening maybe when there is less traffic as i cant see the evening 38s lasting to long They are quite often empty in Norton.

As for the double loop, as far as i'm aware not many drivers do it, most drivers I've spoke to tend to use the duck pond, personal preference I pressume.

(11 Feb 2015, 11:35 pm)chrisnorthern Usual Stagecoach policy - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Just think of how many current Stagecoach routes still use the same service numbers as they did 20+ years ago, wherever you think of, Newcastle, South Shields or Sunderland. I don't remember enough about Hartlepool or Teesside to know if the same is true there but I'm sure somebody will put me right!

(14 Feb 2015, 11:17 pm)MarcTheA4 I think it's more of a long-distance service brand, and I'm not sure any of the services Stagecoach operate in the north east are suited to it.
For example, the 300 over in Cumbria is Whitehaven-Maryport or something, and the total journey time from A to B is about 2 hours.
I'm sure I may have asked this question before, and the response I got was - there are no services in the north east that really justify such an investment. I can't imagine Gold hitting the streets of Newcastle, to be honest. And I'm not a Stagecoach expert at all.
A majority of the services in the north east provided by Stagecoach seem to be cross-city, etc, and I'm not really sure the Gold brand is right for any of them.
If Stagecoach introduced a Newcastle-Sunderland service, which would face immediate threat from the Fab56 or Fasts Cats X36 provided by Go North East (and thus be shot down like the OK1 was in competition with Arriva's X1 'The Best One'), I could imagine such a service being a Gold service. But like I say; the chances of that are rather slim.

(14 Feb 2015, 11:20 pm)Racer_Experience I used to hate Arriva they killed off Go North East OK1 Service
Does anyone know the year which the 22/23/24 started to pass Thornhill school in Sunderland?, was it before the 22/23/24 got merged or was it when it ran as the 22/23/24?
And did they loose a link past Thornhill school, hence why the current 23 goes past?

(15 Feb 2015, 5:23 pm)Dan It used to be service 3 which went via Thornhill School, wasn't it? My sister was still in school at the time which is why it rings a bell... She would have left in 2006, so this may act as some guidance...
