Even on my frequent hops on the Piccadilly line  to LHR, which is meant to have extra case room, there's not that much extra. The Thameslink trains are quite spacious and at that time, they won't be too bad from experience. The standard off-peak single fare looks to be about £10. I'm sure they do advance tickets for cheaper.

I'll consider it

I am flying from Gatwick-Montego Bay in a years time, at present an open return 1 adult three children is £174.90 looking as far ahead as possible using VTEC NCL-KGX, the Victoria line as far as Victoria then the Gatwick Express. The North terminal car park at Gatwick is shut when I am there so a Premier Inn Park and Fly plus fuel costs equals about £15 more than the train, with rising fares will it become in nine months time when I could book train tickets will it still be better value?

It depends what you class as value. Where I imagine the train will be marginally cheaper, personally I think a £15 premium for taking the car is worth it, particularly on the return journey. There's also the risk of flight delays scuppering the rail journey home.

The ticket in question is an open return

Indeed, the situation I had in mind was if your flight returned late for whatever reason. Anything past 7pm landing would be cutting it fine to get a train home.

The flight lands at 6.50am, thus I am not concerned
The Flying Scotsman was in the North East yesterday, It was working 1Z48 Carlisle to Leicester.
I photographed it at Chester-Le-Street, After my plan on Plawsworth was abandoned https://www.flickr.com/photos/140662069@...ed-public/
I saw it as well yesterday when it passed through Prudhoe station, not the best photo as it was running at high speed as was using my iPhone, might try and get a better one with my digital camera when it comes back through next Sunday.

Network Rail have today released an article warning against any trespass on the railway; particularly aimed at the summer time when kids are on school holidays. It also includes a video which can be seen below, also. It's hard-hitting but it serves a purpose and I think this is a great move by Network Rail.

Using the tube a lot, I thought this was a joke. Apparently it's not...

Following discussion in the GNE latest thread, my mind went back to the DPTAC guidance of the early 90's (?), that saw early revisions to bus interiors.

A quick google search of DPTAC, found this:

Nasty incident this morning down south.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bed...s-37382635

Two people were hurt when a train derailed near Watford Junction after torrential rain caused a landslide at the mouth of a tunnel.
The 06:19 BST service from Milton Keynes to Euston left the track at about 07:00, Network Rail said.
Part of the train derailed and was clipped by another. Both trains remain in the tunnel after the fire service helped to evacuate about 384 people.
Two people were treated, one for a neck injury and the other for chest pain.
A Virgin train was sent to the scene to take stranded passengers to King's Langley.

From RailUK:
London Midland 06:19 train from Milton Keynes to Euston has hit an landslip and derailed on the approach to Watford Tunnel.

It has come to a stand within the tunnel and has come into contact with the 06:39 LM Euston - Birmingham.
Certainly had the potential to be a disaster - luckily it wasn't.

A spokesman is reputed to have denied that overheard storage will be used for sleepy commuters.

Fake or not?

Fake. The train has been super-imposed, one of the track workers seemingly appears from nowhere and the pantographs are down on the 319s, with no 3rd rail present too.
This was a bit of a Brucey bonus when waiting for my train.
Totally unexpected and I only had a phone with me.

Average age of rolling stock confirmed.

Top 7 of those are due to have an influx of new stock so I'm sure their average ages will drop!

I think there's a line in the article that says the average age will basically half in 3 years time.
Hi all,

Just stumbled across this picture:

Am I right in thinking that that is a 3-car 156? Anyone able to shed any light?

Thanks.

Its a 2 car set attached to 1 car from another set, Central Trains used to do it a lot with there 150's in the West Midlands back in the 90's.

The only Sprinter DMU's which had a fixed 3 car set were the two Class 150 prototypes ( 150001,150002 at GWR ) and the 3 car 158/7s , All bar one at Northern , The other is at GWR ( 158798 )

A pacer and a National? It's like Thomas and Bertie having that race all over again.

A canny watch nonetheless.
Does anyone know about the two carriages that were being shifted today? Saw two lowloaders getting an escort and carrying a carriage each, heading east on the A689 earlier.
They were covered in tarpaulins', so didn't get a proper look unfortunately.
