That might explain the Grand Central 180 that passed through Stillington at 1640-ish.
Sunderland echo have a page about it... Seems some trains are diverting through Sunderland to... adding up to 90 minutes on journeys.

I understand it's a total loss of signalling. Level Crossing barriers are stuck down at certain places.
National Rail Enquiries are saying the problems at Darlington have been caused by vandalism.

I wonder if the people involved know how much misery this sort of thing causes for people travelling.

As did VTEC when they updated their twitter to say the disruption had been cleared. Changed from one thing to another...could only suggest that the vandalism was to the signallig system?

When checking on my other half's train, I saw Grand Central extended their 2021 arrival into Sunderland to go to Newcastle.

They don't think further than themselves unfortunately. Probably copper thieves too, if it's a complete outage.

"That’s a lot of money! Maybe National Rail could use some of the profits from this scheme to work on running the actual trains themselves on time? Just a thought…"

Network Rail own them stations (and the toilets), and they don't run trains. Nor do National Rail. Plus it's websites like these that create pure BS that no other website covers...
Was going to say the same thing, Tommy.

Uninformed 'article' acting as clickbait. Whilst the figures are interesting it's yet another 'blame the railway' type thing.

They need to know that blatant throwing money at the system does not increase punctuality. No amount of money thrown at a system will stop suicides or vandalism.
DfT announce Britains most crowded trains.

There are several peak services out of Edinburgh and Sheffield, that I have been on - that if not making the list, must be close.
Dread to think how busy the ones in the top 10 get, if those ones don't!

Passengers at odds with train industry.
There is a lack of trust according to the article.

However, I don't think it is limited solely to the rail sector.
It is maybe something both air and bus could look at.
Flying Scotsman restored, with testing to start soon.

I am shocked to have just seen out of the window of my VTEC HST, at Doncaster 60049 in EW&S livery, wasn't that abolished 5-10 years ago?

There isn't anything on it for a year now, when it was last sighted at Toton.
