I suppose it is like any business, but the work that goes on behind the scenes just to get buses on the road is sometimes unreal....and to the normal travelling public, they will not even notice the difference  Big Grin

Turn up, drive bus (route pre-determined so nothing to worry about), finish shift, go home . . .

Except you have to keep stopping to let people get on and then get off.

The job would be easier without the stopping and starting (and keeping to the timetable would also be easier).

Then there are breakdowns . . .

Quick question!

My Get Around Key ran out earlier this year now I'm 18. Is it worth getting a normal Key? The only time I'd use it is if I ever drove to Hexham to then go on a GNE trip (otherwise I'd get an explorer). Are there any decent all-zone day tickets (like the Get Around for £3.75) please?

Or is it cheaper/easier to stick to Explorers?

I don't think there's much point having one, if you're not getting more than a day ticket. The only benefit of having it on a smart card is that you don't lose your money if you lose your weekly/monthly ticket.

Also, you can't top up smart cards for day tickets, so you'd still have to keep buying them online.

The Key will save you money compared with paying cash on the bus but the down side is you need to purchase your day tickets in multiples of three or ten.
Cost comparison of Key V cash payment based on  three day passes:
1 Zone Key = £13.20, cash = £14.55.
2 Zone key = £17.50, cash = £18.90.
3 Zone key = £22.24, cash = £23.40.

The Key is also useful when advance notice of a price increase is announced as you can top up your Key at pre-incresed price and store the tickets for  future use.

Small update from me...

Deptford's "Fab Fifty Six" branded Volvo B9TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 6085 (NL63 YHN) has returned to Deptford from Thornton's, following GKN Flywheel modifications.

The movements as a result of the loss of a number of Nexus miscellaneous works contracts are starting to commence. So far:
- Dennis Trident/East Lancs Lolyne 3874 (W184 SCU) has transferred from Percy Main to Stanley.
- Volvo B10BLE/Wright Renown 4923 (X923 WGR) has transferred from Deptford to Riverside.
- Scania L94UB/Wright Solar 4935 (Y935 ERG) has transferred from Chester-le-Street to Washington.

Ultimately, I believe that further Volvo B10BLEs, DAF SB120s and Dennis Tridents will be withdrawn from service.

8252 seems to still be getting a regular work out at Washington. Are there any plans to withdraw this soon, given it's the only one of that batch left in service?

Given that busmanT has previously confirmed that 4896 - 4925 are to be modified to become DDA-compliant, logic would dictate that the oldest remaining Volvo B10BLEs in the fleet (the ex-Oxford dual-door 5151 - 5165 batch) will be the next in-line for withdrawal, with a couple already having been withdrawn. This will alleviate the need for Go North East to spend money modifying these to become DDA-compliant, too.

I'd imagine that the arrival of Scania L94 4935 from Chester-le-Street will allow for 8252 to be withdrawn, providing neither 8254 or 8255 are in a worse condition.

It makes sense to get as many Volvo B10BLEs as possible into Riverside Depot from an operational perspective, as this is where the majority are allocated already. I'd imagine that fleet engineers would much rather have a consistent and standardised fleet rather than one of every single vehicle type, as they'll be better equipped to have spare parts (and in turn will be able to get the bus back out on the road quicker), and they'll have a better knowledge of how to repair a specific fault on that vehicle type.
