September Service Changes

RE: September Service Changes
What’s happening with the 28/28A?

An extension and longer route is exactly what a chronically unreliable 21 needs especially since we’ve got 4 years of Durham Road becoming essentially a car park when the A1 closures kick in.
Wistfully stuck in the 90s

Since the 16/16a will be going double decker, does that mean 78 will be the only single decker operation left at consett, if so then if 1 or 2 streetlite VOR then a double decker can stand in for replacement on the 78

The whole aim of the X30/X31 & X70/X71/X72 changes will be to rationalise the South Gateshead corridor (upto every 10 minutes rather than having the X30 & X70/X71 chasing each other as now).
X70/X71 won't serve cragside gardens, only other change to X70 will see it revert to the original route between Dipton and pickering nook. Therefore a 20 minute frequency on common section of route between Sunniside and Gateshead/Newcastle.

Deckers on 78 I think will be a common site.

I think it's inevitable with the Brandon extension that GNE will start turning the 21 round at Durham if it's running late, much like they seem to do with the x21 when they stop it at Bishop Auckland rather than continue on to West Auckland.

That happens? That seems like a terrible service, clearly not much usage in West Auckland, it’s one thing turning around a heavy frequency service ie. a 56 or 21 not going to Newcastle, And on the odd occasion I’m sure I’ve seen 60s turn round at Seaham Harbour rather than continuing to Parkside, but only when there’s two running together.
Every 30 minute services shouldn’t be terminating early.

Arnison Centre is already a frequent casualty when delays occur much to the annoyance of the passengers waiting there especially those who are likely to have shopping with them.

From what I've seen they'll run through to West Auckland when late however on afternoon's at least when delayed will omit the West Auckland / Tindle / Woodhouse section and just run light to start at Bishop Bus Station

I knew the Arnison Centre was an accident waiting to happen as soon as they said they were diverting the 21 to serve there. It also doesn't help that it currently only has a 4 minute layover at Durham which for a service as vulnerable to delays as the 21 is nowhere near enough.

Seen this comment on the GNE Facebook page:

Hi all,
I am petitioning to durham county council to prevent the closure of the 71 bus from Chester le Street to Seaham, this is the only direct route to Seaham.
This won't just affect myself but others who rely on this bus, elderly passengers will lose there freedom who use this bus to get out and about.
Please let's flood dutham County council and go north east so they can present to the council, I'd really appreciate your support. Please put yes on my post if you would like to keep the bus 71.
Thank you in advance.
Go North East

Not sure who the poster is but they seem to be informed that the 71 is being stopped because of Durham County Council rather than Go North East. Presumably they’re suggesting some subsidiary is being withdrawn, I’m not sure what sections DCC fund, but of course the bus company could take on these routes commercially.

I notice at least one person commenting that they didn’t know about the 71 route and it’s an interesting point, maybe more needs to be done to raise awareness of routes, it’s one thing pushing ticket options, new zones and extra day tripper routes and the like, but perhaps more promotion of their normal routes?

The section between Seaham and Houghton has been subsidised in the past. However, I believe they took it on commercially not too many years back.
That might have changed at some point though.

Normally we get a couple days heads up with the changes going onto VOSA.
We sometimes even get to see them on the likes of Traveline early

Vosa are currently behind, so wouldn't surprise me, if they appear on the GNE site first.

RE: September Service Changes
This is what I've got based on the following:
* X31 serves Consett
* 10 minute layover at Eldon Square & 23 minute layover for X30 at Stanley

Total PVR will be 13x with most if not all driver changeovers in Consett.

Pattern A -  4hr 29m PVR 5X
- X31 Consett > Newcastle (00:33 > 01:40)
- X72 Newcastle > Stanley (01:50 > 02:46)
- X72 Stanley > Newcastle (02:52 > 03:50)
- X31 Newcastle > Consett (04:00 > 05:02)

Pattern B - 3hr 53m PVR 4X
- X71 Consett > Newcastle (05:12 > 06:10)
- X30 Newcastle > Stanley (06:20 > 06:58)
- X30 Stanley > Newcastle (07:21 > 08:00)
- X71 Newcastle > Consett (08:10 > 09:05)

Pattern C - 3hr 53m PVR 4X
- X70 Consett > Newcastle (09:32 > 10:30)
- X30 Newcastle > Stanley (10:40 > 11:18)
- X30 Stanley > Newcastle (11:41 > 12:20)
- X70 Newcastle > Consett (12:30 > 13:25)
RE: September Service Changes
GNE could therefore technically use a loophole for the taxi guarantee that only the X70 & X71 can carry bikes. That means only Patterns B & C (Total PVR = 8x) would need allocated anything out of 6341-51. That also means 2x out of 6338-40 could be used without bike racks needing to be retrofitted.

If X72 were to serve Stanley, would gne consider to re number it for simplicity
RE: September Service Changes
(03 Aug 2021, 10:27 pm)JM03 wrote If X72 were to serve Stanley, would gne consider to re number it for simplicity
It will likely if not almost certainly be numbered the X72 as it will form a common 20 minute frequency between Byermoor & Newcastle with the X70 & X71.

Current PVRs (Total = 27x)
- X30 = 4x
- X31/X45/X46 = 13x
- X47/X70/X71 = 9x
- V9 = 1x

New PVRs (Educated guess - Total 28x)
- X30/X31 & X70/X71/X72 = 13x
- X45/X46 = 9x
- 47/47A = 6x

Obviously any increase would likely be counteracted by changes to the 6/6A/M6/M7/M8

But given I've been told by a driver that it's the X30 that will continue to run through to Consett, how does that add in?

M6, M7 and M8 are all being discontinued.   6 is replacing them in Tanfield Lea and Burnopfield.

X72 might get Tanfield Village as well as Tantobie, Flint Hill, Dipton, Catchgate and Annfield Plain to Stanley.  I speculated on the route earlier (Newcastle - Gateshead - Lobley Hill - Sunniside - Crookgate then as previous sentence in this message) though you can take out the Cragside Gardens bit - that was speculative.

Evenings might be interesting as X72 might just be Monday to Saturday daytime, which brings the 6A into the equation for the Annfield Plain section as per now.

That leaves Tanfield Lea out in the cold in the evening.

Now a couple of strippers / burlesque dancers on the first X72 and we'd be talking!!!  It would wake up the early commuters for sure.

That said, any PC student types would probably get upset.  Tongue
