Go North East: Latest News & Discussion - August 2013

RE: Go North East
(12 Aug 2013, 4:48 pm)BJ10VUS wrote It is the B10BLE drawing, but to be honest it could just be a quick attempt at having something similar looking to a Prestige on the timetable? To be honest, the regular passenger probably wouldn't notice the difference between the vehicles on the timetables.

Or at least get it right wasn't it confirmed they were going to scania's.

Either way don't think the passengers will notice

I guess those Friday/Saturday/Sunday between Durham and Langley; and Consett and Rowlands Gill (via Chopwell), must generate enough revenue to cover operating costs. There used to quite a few people travelling on the last 45 (or 759 as it was back then) between Chopwell and Highfield although very few people seemed to pay.
RE: Go North East
(12 Aug 2013, 4:17 pm)gtomlinson wrote Does anyone know where the 28B turns around in Birtley?

Does it turn off Station Lane and then turn up at the old Fire Station?

I don't know the answer, but according to both GNE's timetable, which states that the 28B serves all stops northbound between Chester-le-Street and Birtley War Memorial, and the Nexus timetable which has the northbound route as Station Lane then Durham Road, this would indicate that the 28B serves the War Memorial stop on both sides, which it couldn't do if turned off at Station Lane and then up Edward Road.

I can only assume that to serve the War Memorial on both sides it turns up Birtley Lane and uses that bit of road at the bottom of Fell Bank where the Queens Head is to turn back round. Could well be wrong, though.

On the Transport Direct website, it says services terminate at Birtley Library. I think it turns left at the end of Station Road and terminates on Durham Road. It then goes left on to Ravensworth Road and back on to Station Road towards Chester-le-Street?

Thats what I was thinking it'd serve Ravensworth Road then Edward Road then Durham Road to bring it back to the library.

As above changes I've already mentioned but

05.40 Durham - Newcastle withdrawn (M-F)

Hmmm, seems a bit of a mystery! Also, I see that the 28A changes haven't routed the bus away from Kibblesworth. We'll have to wait until September to see how the 1/1A changes affect Kibblesworth. No doubt there'll be another change before Christmas Tongue

I'm sure the 1A will be exactly the same as the 24A.

I'm keen on getting some photos of early morning 24s as I sense they too will change.
RE: Go North East
After turning left from Station Road onto Durham Road to set down at the bus stop there, it could feasibly turn right up Orchard Street then left down Birtley Lane for its return journey. From what I recall, everything seems to be one-way and it is theoretically possible to get a bus up there.

Tight but possible but thats a hell of a climb for a DAF to make, its at Long Bank levels of steepness the Avenue

It won't get up Orchard Street it's too tight in terms of cars and then the turn out on Birtley Lane is incredibly tight

I think it actually might? It stops at Birtley Library (from Chester-le-Street) and Dunelm Close (towards Chester-le-Street). It's the stop that the 21 uses - in front of the one that the 28, 28A, X2 and X22 use.

Just picked up on these. There's no way The Avenue or Orchard Street could be used by a full length single decker.
The idea about heading along The Bronx could work, but turning right onto Durham Road could be iffy with a canny wait.
The only other suggestion (apart from it using an MPD and Harris Bank) would be a loop of Fell Bank and Mt Pleasant Road that runs parallel to Fell Bank, with a short run along Portmeads Road, before heading back down.

There's only one stop there now, they took the other one out. Ravensworth Road and Edward St makes more sense

I'm intrigued....I want to know!

Bronx has to be the most logical, wasted mileage otherwise. Durham Road isn't busy at that time of night to be honest but Edward Street was closed for a while last month.

The 28B arrives 14 past and leaves at 21. 7 minutes go missing!
RE: Go North East
Did the 28B ever used to go all the way along to the Coach and Horses, or was that just where the last journey on the 28 when it ran late used to terminate at?

I don't think so, the last 21 (pre-N21) used to terminate at the Coach and take the A1 back to Chester
RE: Go North East
Could it be running onto a Street Shuttle? Can't remember times off hand, but pretty sure they run 'past' the hour.
If it was running onto an M2, then it wouldn't need to turn around anywhere...
28b - ....Ouston - Station Lane,
M2 - Station Lane, Fell Bank, Portmeads, Portobello Road etc - Washington

M2 - Washington - Portobello Road, Portmeads, Fell Bank - Station Lane.
28b - Station Lane, Ouston etc

Just trying to think of another option, because after ignoring The Bronx for donkeys years, why would they decide to serve it on a night?

They aren't really serving it. It would probably run without stopping a very short distance along Ravensworth Road to Edward Street and back to Durham Road (it's not really the Bronx there)

The 77 used to miss out Windsor Road and Elizabethville on an evening because of anti-social behaviour, but did still used to serve Ravensworth Road, so I think you're right in that it's not really Ravensworth Road they would have a problem with.

I don't think so, as Arriva run the 'Street Shuttle' evening services from Birtley to Concord. Also, the service finishes for evening at Chester-le-Street, rather than finishing at Birtley - this could possibly suggest the service is based at Chester-le-Street depot to save dead mileage?

iirc, most if not all of the houses down there have been demolished and its mainly older folk down there (hence the 23) That area doesn't really have much of a reputation or problem anymore. Though the old BAE site will be redeveloped with 300 houses which may call for additional services down there.

Waggonway is def a Chester service, think they took it over when it became the 28 (728/09 being Stanley based and 733 being Chester I think)

Not really keeping up with this discussion, but I believe the 28B uses a "Lambton Worm" branded vehicle. I don't think it runs off onto anything else while on the 28B.

It's a brain teaser, this 28B! I really have no other ideas Sad

That actually helps, as now we know what runs it and that Orchard Road may be out of the question, as it's still the same vehicle type.

Rob?!

Do we think Ian Hignett or Andy Clifford would know? (if they aren't on here?)

I'm off work this week or I'd ask the driver in the morning!

Do we have any Birtley members who could pop down and receive eternal gratefulness for finding out?
