If you want to try Southwick Green you can catch the GNE 56 from Park Lane. It runs pretty frequently during the day. I normally get off at Southwick Green and then walk over the bridge to Pallion. Badger Minibus Hire is based on the South side of the bridge. They are well worth a look at. Jim Hughes used to be based by the North side of the bridge at Wear Street before they moved to Birtley.
I've never had any trouble in the former mining towns or villages. I was at West Cornforth the other week visiting Scarlet Band's garage. The people were pretty friendly and helpful.
