The A1 at Scremerston has been resurfaced in the last couple of months so I can't imagine any more work on that bit in the near future, but there always seems to be roadworks somewhere between Berwick and Newcastle these days.
I use the X15 / X18 rather a lot and actually they're both pretty reliable, certainly around the Berwick end of the route. The problem the X18 has is that it uses big lumbering E400 buses on twisty, narrow roads for the long coastal section north of Alnwick and they can easily get held up behind tractors, cyclists, Sunday drivers etc...
