Of course a bit further back than that, and you also had Northern services using the Worswick Street bus station.
In my opinion though, as dark and gloomy as it was, it still functioned better as a bus station, than the present Eldon Square does.
Don't forget Marlborough Crescent or Newgate St either mind
For a period after Worswick St closed, a lot of services such as the 2x Durham Road series used Market Street and went back out over the High Level Bridge.
Then there were the 21 series which just called at Pilgrim St for a while.
I think those factors, plus the functionality of the old Eldon Square were a major factor in buses appearing to work better.
The fact there are so many buses per hour trying to fit through the same set of traffic lights on Percy St, compound the issues - in addition to any concerns about the design and layout of Eldon Square.
